Lloyds Bank And Me

What I wrote about Ah Long is to show that people will turn to parties legal or illegal to borrow in time of desperation when banks put too many obstacles in front. Ordinary folks even those with connection like me have problems in getting a bank loan. But we in turn help others without a second thought.

Since 1984 till now I have helped so many people super rich, rich and poor and even lend out money to a tune of over RM100,000 to friends and relatives. When time of need these people not only refused to help but even refused to pay back the borrowed sum. To me money can be earned back but friendship once broken cannot be mended back. I will tell my side of the story, when the time comes, how a billionaire cheated and make me look like a sucker recently.

Right now I will tell you how friendly and helpful Lloyds Bank had been to me. When I was a student in London, there were times I was short of cash. To get an overdraft I had to see the branch Manager. He would ask how much I needed and for how long. After looking through my account, he would suggest the sum of 600 pound, and would that be enough Ms Lai or would you want more? With just a stroke of his pen, the sum of 600 pound was added into my current account. I need not sign anything. It took less than 15 minutes to get an overdraft and no papers to fill up. During my student period I had approached the bank for overdraft three times. Always they approved within 15 minutes. Ten years later when I took my family to London I again approached the bank for an overdraft for the same amount. Again it was the same procedure with ease.

It bothers me a lot here in my own country, I have to fill up forms and submit all kind of papers and they will keep quiet until you start to call them to enquire. After a few calls they will tell you, you have been rejected. When asked for what reason they would just say HQ rejected but there is no letter to inform you. You can wait till donkey years and the letter will never come. There are many red tapes to go through and none to help. But if you are willing to pay RM2,500 upfront for an officer to process and get approval, there is 50% chance you get the sum applied for. That is only for a loan of RM10,000. Anything higher you have to find jalan with the Manager or senior officer. My son had submitted all the necessary forms plus his Photostat Mykad to a few banks in 2007 till today none had acknowledge or rejected in black and white. But when we called up they tell my son his application was rejected without a reason. My main concern is what happens if the documents and his Photostat mykad were to be misused by someone. Would my son not get into trouble? There are many stories being told about crooks misusing other people mykad to apply for loan for houses and most common purchase of second hand cars.

If only our banks can follow the example of Lloyds Bank then Ah Longs in Malaysia can go bust.
