IGP orders review of case after release of Addy Kana, 2 cops
KUALA LUMPUR: Police will review investigations into the case of Zaidi Kanapiah, or Addy Kana, and two policemen following their release from detention under the Prevention of Crime Act 1959 (Poca) for alleged involvement with an online gambling syndicate.
Inspector-General of Police Abdul Hamid Bador said his deputy, Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani, would be pursuing this matter.
“Acryl Sani will call up the officers involved (in investigating the case) for discussion to see if there were weaknesses in the investigations.
“This is to prevent a recurrence (release of suspects under Poca).
“I don’t want police to be viewed as being overzealous in using Poca, without a strong case, which might victimise someone,” he told a press conference after handing over appreciation letters at Bukit Aman today.
Yesterday, a Federal Court bench chaired by Chief Justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat had ordered the three men to be freed after allowing a habeas corpus application for their immediate release from detention.

Fighting over the IGP Position
Puad says the leak of minister’s recording is ‘concerning’
PETALING JAYA: Umno Supreme Council member Mohd Puad Zarkashi today raised concerns over the country’s security after a purported recording of a minister talking about the reshuffle in the police force had gone viral.
Puad claimed the person recorded sounded like home minister Hamzah Zainudin talking about promotions and the change of roles in the police force.
“If the home minister’s conversation can be recorded, then is Malaysia safe? It is not about who recorded it or whether it is legitimate, but the question is: the details in the conversation, is it a scandal?” he asked in a Facebook post today.
Puad said a thorough investigation was necessary and Hamzah might have to lodge a police report beforehand.
“But who has the power to order an immediate investigation, the home minister or the inspector-general of police?
“Is there going to be a big war, with exposés and conflicts that might reduce the country’s confidence in the Perikatan Nasional government?” he asked.
In the recording, which was posted on several blogs, a man was heard discussing giving a Perakian a promotion, plausibly for a police role. The man was also heard saying that another person should no longer decide on the appointment of state police chiefs but could only nominate five names.
FMT has contacted Hamzah and the IGP for comment.

Political extremists causing more damage than suicide bombers, says Hadi
The absence of Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang in Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s entourage during his visit to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Saudi Arabia has recently raised many eyebrows.
In a report by Free Malaysia Today (FMT), Amanah Communications Director Khalid Samad asked how a key official for the region with a ministerial status could be left out of the envoy, adding that social media has been abuzz with various theories on the reasoning behind it.
The Shah Alam MP added that one of the speculations making its rounds is that the UAE had declined to provide Hadi with a visa on the grounds that he is a member of an Islamic organisation which is still listed as a terrorist organisation by some countries in the region.
“It is not fair to make wild accusations but the government should not ignore the questions raised either. It is important for the prime minister’s office to clarify this and put a stop to the unhealthy debate in social media.

Judge orders Momoh's release from 'unconstitutional' detention
Nigerian facing deportation forced to thumbprint ‘unknown’ papers, claims lawyer
SHAH ALAM: Nigerian national Simon Adavize Momoh was allegedly forced to thumbprint documents with “unknown contents” during his time under detention, claims his lawyer.
According to V Vemal Arasan, Momoh only found out the documents were to acknowledge the cancellation of his long-term spouse visa, and deportation when they met for the first time last Friday.
“He was informed that the documents were for his release,” Vemal claimed after a habeas corpus hearing at the High Court here today. “All this while, Momoh thought he was going to be released.”
He said that following the claim by Momoh, who remains detained at the Semenyih immigration depot, he prepared a new affidavit and filed it with the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) yesterday.
At this morning’s hearing, the deputy public prosecutor requested for more time to respond to the affidavit.
Judge Ab Karim Ab Rahman agreed to this and set the next hearing for Friday afternoon. He also advised immigration authorities not to take any action on Momoh’s deportation, pending this matter.
Also present at the hearing was lawyer CR Selva, who kept a watching brief for the Bar Council and Foreign Spouses Support Group (FSSG), and the NGO Family Frontiers.
A representative from the Nigerian High Commission, who was present at the first hearing on April 9, was absent today.
Vemal also claimed that no remand order had been issued within the first two weeks of Momoh’s initial arrest for drink-driving on March 15.
He said this was a violation of Article 5(4) of the Federal Constitution, which was also reflected in Section 51 of the Immigration Act.
Meanwhile, Momoh’s wife, Low Kar Hui, has written to home minister Hamzah Zainudin over the deportation order.
“Since Momoh wasn’t given the opportunity (to appeal the order) and there was a seven-day time period, his wife has appealed to the home minister personally, seeking his good sense to reverse all decisions and release Momoh immediately,” said Vemal.
A judicial review has also been filed against the immigration director-general to challenge Momoh’s deportation and cancelled visa. It will take place on May 4 here.
Momoh’s deportation order, which was emailed to his wife on April 14, had asked Low to prepare arrangements for his flight back to Nigeria. According to the order, Momoh is deemed a prohibited immigrant.
Momoh has been married to Low for the past eight years and has a valid visa. He was arrested at a roadblock in Cheras in the early hours of March 15 on suspicion of drink-driving.
He pleaded guilty in court the same day, paid the RM12,000 fine and Low was told he would be released at 5pm. However, he was detained at the Semenyih detention centre after that and his one-day imprisonment now allows for his visa to be cancelled.
Vemal and Low had been denied permission to meet Momoh until last Friday, with the authorities previously citing Covid-19 restrictions and a power outage at the centre as the reasons.
***********************************************
MOMOH IS NOT THE FIRST CASE.
THERE WERE HUNDREDS WHO COULD NOT AFFORD A LAWYER OR PAID A HEFTY SUM AS BRIBE WERE DEPORTED EVEN AFTER PAYING A FINE.
I KNOW OF A WOMAN WHO PAID RM60,000 AS BRIBE SO THAT SHE WILL NOT BE DEPORTED EVEN THOUGH SHE GOT ALL HER PAPERS AND CHILDREN BORN HERE.
ANOTHER LADY WAS PAYING RM1,000 MONTHLY TO IMMIGRATION OFFICERS FOR 10 YEARS SHE WAS IN MALAYSIA. EVEN THOUGH HER MALAYSIAN HUSBAND WAS WITH THE FOREIGN AFFAIR. FINALLY SHE HAD ENOUGH AND THE WHOLE FAMILY MIGRATED TO NEW ZEALAND.
THIS IS HOW OUR AUTHORITIES PREDETERMINE THE PUNISHMENT AND FABRICATING EVIDENCES TO GET RICH.
I STRONGLY BELIEVE MOMOH SHOULD SUE IMMIGRATION DEPARTMENT FOR MILLIONS TO TEACH THEM A LESSON.
AFTER ALL WHAT HAS HE GOT TO LOSE BECAUSE THE SAME CROOKS WILL FIND EXCUSES TO DEPORT HIM IF NOT THIS YEAR THEN NEXT YEAR.

Pressure weighs on Malaysia’s royal family over vaccine allegations
The royal family is getting a lot of heat from Malaysians after allegations surfaced that they have taken unapproved vaccines courtesy of friends in the United Arab Emirates.
The family has yet to publicly address allegations claiming that they have obtained the Sinopharm vaccine that were published in the Asia Sentinel on Friday, citing unnamed sources. Even Queen Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah, 60, who is the most active on social media within the family, had refrained from commenting on the matter despite pressure from the public. She did post one cryptic message on Instagram today after her account went dark on Monday.
“One day you will tell your story of how you overcame what you went through and it will be someone else’s survival guide,” she posted, quoting American motivational speaker Brene Brown.
The allegations were mentioned in the report titled Malaysia Fades in Covid Fight, which said that Malaysia’s blue bloods were inoculated in January using the Sinopharm vaccine, which has not been approved by the Ministry of Health in Malaysia. The report also alleged that Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah received an additional 2,000 doses of the vaccine “to take home” for his family and friends. Asia Sentinel added that the Health Director-General Noor Hisham Abdullah had tried to stop them from receiving the unapproved vaccines, but failed. Noor Hisham has not publicly commented on the article.
Nobody else from the royal family has commented on the matter on their respective social media platforms. The king does not have personal social media accounts.
Hundreds of the queen’s 1.2 million followers have written in the comments asking for a “clear statement” about the royal family’s vaccination status.
The queen is also being criticized over her now-deleted comments that suggested she had been vaccinated. One of them was the cheeky comment “Dengki ke (Are you jealous)?” that was written in reply to a commenter asking whether her chefs were also vaccinated.
The hashtag #DengkiKe has been trending on Twitter with more than 50,000 tweets, some featuring a now-deleted post by Azizah saying: “by the way netizens… i have had two shots of the vaccine… alhamdulillah.”
Twitter user @PointMHD was among those who reacted to the queen, saying: “Ordinary Malaysians have been waiting for vaccines patiently since months ago, and our Queen can ask us #DengkiKe when we ask them about their vaccination.”
User @IzzRaifHarz chimed in: “So instead of directly responding to the allegations, they just cynically posted religious quotes and now after constant confrontation from the public they deactivated their social media? Very [suspicious].”
The hashtags #Sinopharm and the phrase “Agong,” which refers to Malaysia’s king, also trended on Twitter over the weekend as many Malaysians were left in the dark about whether the allegations were true.
Health Minister Adham Baba yesterday denied that the royals received Sinopharm vaccines and labeled the report as “negative.” He was also named in the report.
