A King for our time

 

The Yang Di-Pertuan Agong has to weigh the people’s interests over those of politicians in acceding to the government’s emergency request

OUR Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, is a Monarch who endears himself to the people. This is not by design. It is just the person that he is.

Following in his late father Sultan Ahmad Shah’s footsteps, His Majesty is as comfortable sitting on the throne in the Bilik Mengadap of the Palace as he is at a roadside roti canai stall in Pekan.

As the president of the Football Associaton of Malaysia (FAM) and then of the Malaysian Hockey Federation (MHF), among others, he is well in tune with the rakyat’s passions, be it on or off the pitch.

Which is why Sultan Abdullah is probably the ruler we need during these trying times. His Majesty can be the bridge between the rakyat and the ruling elite, as well as a credible sounding board for some of his fellow brother rulers in articulating the pulse of the nation and communicating the will and concerns of the people.

With the nation in unprecedented limbo over a looming health / economic emergency to stem the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic, His Majesty is looked upon to ensure that those who govern are calling for this emergency out of sincere concern for the nation and that the pending emergency declaration is not an opportunity for unelected politicians to hold on to power for as long as they can.

Surely His Majesty who is non-partisan will exercise his judgment in acceding to the emergency request by the government – that is, is it needed or is there a hidden agenda?

Surely His Majesty is aware that the coalition that serves His Majesty’s government is an unelected one that does not have the people’s mandate to govern. The coalition that the people voted for in 2018 is the legitimate government which was ousted by political scheming earlier this year.

Hence, for an unelected and morally compromised administration to suspend Parliament and rule by force, fear and confusion is unacceptable and threatens to relegate us to a pariah state akin to oppressive regimes, where we will take years to recover – economically and socially.

The whole country at this moment is in a state of panic. People are rushing home, supermarkets are seeing long lines, restaurant and hotel bookings are being cancelled, and our phones have been ringing since noon from members of the public seeking clarity.

That the people are put in this position of fear and confusion at this early stage with not a squeak out of Putrajaya is a testament to the incompetence and lack of care of Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s administration.

That the spread of the pandemic in its third wave was caused by returning politicians from Sabah and the confusing SOPs that are being issued every day is a damning indictment on this government’s inability to care for the people during this time of national crisis.

With the pandemic largely loose in Sabah with 528 new infections, while states like Kelantan are virtually zero, it begs the question: why an emergency and not a conditional movement control order (CMCO)?

With the Budget due on Nov 6, how can the country’s fiscal management for the following year be discussed?

That the timing of the emergency request comes three weeks after the announcement of the opposition leader that Muhyiddin’s government has lost its majority support is suspicious.

These are the questions that the King, one suspects, would have asked the prime minister. Because the King’s first duty is to the people, not politicians, and we are assured that we have a no-nonsense Monarch who is conscious of his role within the constitution. The Federal Constitution is always spotted in pictures of the King with the prime minister at their weekly Wednesday audience.

It is with this in mind that we the rakyat implore His Majesty not to allow politicians with vested interests to hijack our constitution and our democracy.

We believe His Majesty will do the right thing.

Malaysia 2020 Emergency

 The Malayan Emergency (Malay: Darurat Malaya) was a guerrilla war fought in the Federation of Malaya from 1948 until 1960. The conflict was between Commonwealth armed forces and pro-independence fighters of the Malayan National Liberation Army (MNLA), the military wing of the Malayan Communist Party (MCP). The war was fought over attempts by communist forces to gain independence for Malaya from the British Empire and to establish a socialist economy. The fighting spanned both the colonial period and the creation of an independent Malaya (1957). Although it was referred to as "The Emergency" by colonial authorities, the MNLA referred to it as the "Anti-British National Liberation War".^[1] The conflict was called an "Emergency" by the British for insurance purposes, as London-based insurers would not have paid out in instances of civil wars.^[2]

In June 1948 the colonial government declared a state of emergency in British Malaya after the killing of three Europeans during attacks on plantations.^[3] Under the leadership of Chin Peng, communist activists regrouped in the Malayan jungles and formed the MNLA to wage a guerrilla war against British colonial rule. Many of the MNLA fighters who fought against British colonialism were former members of the Malayan Peoples' Anti-Japanese Army (MPAJA) who had been trained and funded by the British years prior to fight against the Imperial Japanese Army during the Second World War. The majority of the support for the communist rebels came from the ethnic Malayan-Chinese population, most of which lived in dire poverty, were subject to racial persecution and were barred from voting in elections. The communists belief in gender equality allowed many women to join the MNLA and their civilian support network, the Min Yuen. However, with the exception of the Orang Asli aboriginals, the MNLA failed to gain any major following from any ethnic groups other than the Malayan-Chinese due to the association of communism with China and long-standing racial tensions within Malaya.^{[citation needed]}

After the MNLA had established a series of jungle bases, they began conducting raids on British colonial police and military installations. Tin mines and rubber plantations also became frequent targets of communist sabotage in attempts to make the colonial occupation of Malaya too expensive for the British to maintain. British military experiences during the Emergency would lay the groundwork for future anti-insurgency operations, most famously in the Vietnam War as American forces (largely unsuccessfully) attempted to replicate British strategies used in Malaya. The operational tactics of the Commonwealth troops pioneered the concept of Search and destroy, saw widespread use of Agent Orange^[4] and popularised the term "Hearts and Minds". High emphasis was placed on rapid response units that could respond quickly to guerrilla attacks and the formation of local auxiliary forces.^{[citation needed]}

Under the Briggs Plan the British created a system of 400 internment camps called "New villages" to imprison over 400,000 civilians, mostly Chinese but also Indian and Orang Asli, in an attempt to segregate the MNLA guerrillas from the civilian population.^[5] The British then attempted to starve the communist guerrillas by implementing a food denial campaign by enforcing food rationing on civilians, killing livestock and using chemical herbicides to destroy rural farmland.^[5] As the conflict began, earlier attempts to defeat the communists unintentionally included the execution of unarmed villagers, the most infamous case being the Batang Kali massacre which is often referred to as "Britain's My Lai".

Despite the war ending in 1960, communist leader Chin Peng renewed the insurgency against the Malaysian government in 1967. This second phase of the insurgency lasted until 1989.

KUALA LUMPUR – Minister of International Trade and Industry Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali’s statement this morning on the work-from-home guidelines to stem the spread of the third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic has elicited much confusion.

The Vibes attempts to interpret what the statement means

• There are 3.1 million workers in the manufacturing, services and construction sectors.
• Of these 3.1 million workers, 25% or 776,135 are in management and supervisory positions.
• Of these 776, 135 people, 10% are allowed to work for four hours, from 10am to 2pm, for three days a week, as long as they are in the accounting, finance, administrative, legal, planning and ICT sections.
• Affected companies that need their management and supervisory staff to work on-site need not apply for ministry approval. They only need to issue travel permission letters for these staff members to be presented at police roadblocks over the duration of the CMCO.
• Employers are expected to provide work-from-home guidelines. However, if they do not do so, there is no monitoring from the authorities and hence this does not mean anything. — The Vibes, October 21, 2020

Maszlee hits out at ministers ‘missing in action’

Maszlee Malik claims that some ministers were inefficient in their work.

PETALING JAYA: Former education minister Maszlee Malik has taken several ministers to task for “going missing” when they were especially needed during the Covid-19 crisis.

In a media interview today, he said the current government had failed to manage the crisis brought about by the pandemic.

Maszlee told Sinar Harian that some ministers were not only inefficient in their work, but had also breached the law.

“Where was the health minister when Covid-19 cases soared to above 800 in a day? Where was the education minister when children could no longer go to school to study? Where was the higher education minister when students were in need?

“What about the minister who breached quarantine orders and remains free?,” he said in a reference to Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister Mohd Khairuddin Aman Razali who admitted last month he had failed to observe home quarantine after returning from a trip to Turkey.

Maszlee told Sinar Harian that “the ministers we have aren’t just scared to face the people and explain themselves, but are even afraid of the media, leaving the people perplexed and confused.”

Maszlee was education minister in the Pakatan Harapan government led by Dr Mahathir Mohamad but was forced to resign in January after several education controversies. He left PPBM with Mahathir and a few others in March after the PH government fell.

‘Solve political crisis through Dewan Rakyat’

Amid reports that he was among the MPs supporting PKR president Anwar Ibrahim’s attempt at forming a new government, Maszlee, who is MP for Simpang Renggam, said this matter was not as important as the predicament that the nation is currently facing.

“Our country isn’t just in health and economic crises but also humanitarian and leadership crises under a government whose stability is under question, and whose Cabinet lineup is inefficient,” he said.

Maszlee said the people were suffering, with many losing jobs, while facing a looming economic crisis when the automatic loan moratorium ends this month.

He added there was only one way to resolve the ongoing political crisis to bring some stability to the country, which was through the Dewan Rakyat.

“This will also give the people evidence as to how much support the prime minister commands today. This also resolves the matter according to the Constitution and strengthens the democratic system that we practice,” he said.

INSTEAD OF FINDING SOLUTION TO STUDENTS WHO CANNOT ATTEND SCHOOLS AND UNIVERSITY, THE MINISTERS CHOOSE TO DO NOTHING BECAUSE THEY DO NOT KNOW WHAT TO DO.
