Mahathir's dirty scheme
In attempting to deflect DAP's outcry against what it regarded as victimisation by the RoS, some referred to UMNO's "de-registration" in their attempt to say that DAP should respect the law and risked de-registration for breaching the law as UMNO did when it was de-registered before.
UMNO's de-registration is a subject close to my heart all this while. It is a prelude to the subsequent rape of the Judiciary and the resultant submissiveness and beholden of the Judiciary towards the Executive.
It all began when DrM was challenged for UMNO's Presidency in 1987 by Ku Li. He won by 46 votes (if I am not mistaken).
11 UMNO members brought a case to Court to nullify the result because, as alleged by them, there were representatives of illegal UMNO branches who voted at the General Assembly.
The late Raja Aziz Addruse was acting for them (or some of them - I can't remember exactly). G Sri Ram (later, Judge of the Federal Court - now retired) was acting for UMNO.
Now, many people do not know this. Or forgot about this.
Raja Aziz NEVER ASKED the Court to declare UMNO illegal. All he was asking was a declaration that the result of the UMNO election was void.
So, who was it who asked for UMNO to be declared illegal?
G Sri Ram, the Counsel WHO WAS ACTING FOR UMNO, was the one who told the Court that under the law, UMNO became illegal because of the existence of the unregistered branches.
Yes. IT WAS THE COUNSEL OF UMNO ITSELF WHO SAID SO. NOT RAJA AZIZ.
When G Sri Ram pointed that out to the Judge, Raja Aziz reacted with surprised. He was HORRIFIED. He told the Judge, "THAT IS A KAMIKAZE DEFENCE." That was what he said as reported by newspapers.
Raja Aziz reiterated that he never asked for UMNO to be declared illegal. G Sri Ram said under the law it is.
The Judge then HAD NO CHOICE but to declare that UMNO was illegal. After that declaration, UMNO was de-registered.
Now, the question is, WHO HAD THE POWER TO INSTRUCT G SRI RAM TO TELL THE COURT THAT UMNO WAS ILLEGAL?
Ku Li? Musa Hitam? The UMNO 11? Anwar Ibrahim? Daim Zainuddin? Samy Vellu? Popye the Sailor Man?
Have I left out anybody?
