Negeri Sembilan Results:  A wake up call for the Unity Government

The election results in Negeri Sembilan should be a serious warning to DAP and PKR. Many voters appear to believe that the government has not delivered on the promises of reform, good governance and improving the people's cost of living.  Elections are ultimately decided by public confidence and today's results suggest that confidence has weakened.

To regain the trust of Malaysians, the government must demonstrate that no one is above the law. Political accountability should begin with leadership.  In my view, DAP Secretary General Anthony Loke should take responsibility for the party's poor performance by stepping down.

The government must also restore public confidence in the justice system be ensuring that the law is applied fairly and consistently, without political interference.  Many Malaysians continue to question the handling of the case involving Deputy Prime Minister Zahid Hamidi and equal treatment under the law is essential if trust is to be rebuilt.

Accountability should also extend to public institutions.  Malaysians deserve full transparency regarding the losses associated with Lembaga Tabung Haji.  If investigations establish that any former officials committed offences or breached their legal responsibilities, they should be prosecuted according to the law.

In my opinion, the most suitable person to lead or oversee such investigations would be Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay.  His experience investigating high profile cases and his reputation for professionalism could help reassure the public that investigations would be conducted independently and without fear or favour.

The Negeri Sembilan results are more than just an electoral setback.  They are a message from voters that they expect integrity, accountability and justice.  If the government responds with decisive action instead of political rhetoric, it still has an opportunity to rebuild public confidence before the next general election.
