On the night of 31 January, 18 young children, all students of a rural boarding school, SK Punan Ba in Sarawak’s Belaga district, were injured when their dilapidated wooden hostel (built in 1983) collapsed on them. According to the school’s headmaster, the ‘ramshackle wooden hostel’ had been earmarked for renovation (see Borneo Postreport).

Instead, for lack of repairs, five primary schoolgirls suffered ‘serious injuries’ while 13 others had ‘minor fractures’. Luckily, there were no fatalities reported – although fatalities or permanent paralysis may still occur if any of the five ‘seriously injured’ schoolgirls do not respond well to medical treatment.

For those who do not understand medical parlance, a ‘serious injury’ refers to the fact that the patient is bedridden after an accident and is incapable of walking. For those amongst us who have suffered ‘minor fractures’, we would all understand how painful, difficult and inconvenient an experience that can be. What more if the person is a child who is living in a rural and underfunded boarding school far away from family and loved ones, most of whom are poor and marginalised.

School buildings collapse and burn down regularly in Sarawak and Sabah owing to neglect and for lack of urgent maintenance funds.

Yet, the news of this accident only emerged on the front pages of the Borneo Post, a local Sarawak English daily, on 4 February. Instead of focusing on the sad plight of the schoolchildren and their recovery; instead of engaging politicians and bureaucrats by demanding concrete measures to ensure that such accidents do not recur, the newspaper focused on the visit of local luminaries, MP Billy Abit Joo (Hulu Rejang), Kapit Resident Dahim Nadot and Belaga District Education Officer Nelson @ Milon Saing to the school.

According to the news report, the three visited the school last Thursday to see for themselves the extent of damage. The newspaper also carried a front page photo of the trio looking upon the accident site, presumably to showcase ‘how deeply concerned’ they were.

To this end, the news report also highlighted that Hulu Rajang MP Billy Abit Joo handed over a RM10000 grant to the school’s Parent-Teacher Association to carry out repair work in the school. He was quoted as having said, “I am saddened by what had happened. Safety of the pupils should always be given priority. I hope such an incident will not happen again in future.”

Yeah, right! Ho-hum…

What’s the use of Billy Abit applying a paltry RM10000 plaster on a long festering wound? He has been MP of Hulu Rajang for 22 years now. And still the numerous rural schools within his constituency continue to be badly neglected and lack maintenance funds. Why has he not done more to ensure that school buildings and facilities in his constituency are safe and secure for rural schoolchildren?

Indeed, considering that this school building collapse is only another mishap in a long litany of many others in Sabah and Sarawak that have succumbed to collapse and to fires, why has the government not done anything significant to ensure that our rural children get to live and study in safe and secure school buildings?

Or is this school collapse just another case of poor, rural students not being important enough in our high-level national development agendas?

Perhaps if a building had collapsed on MP Billy Abit Joo (Hulu Rejang), Kapit Resident Dahim Nadot and Belaga District Education Officer Nelson @ Milon Saing or better still on the Federal Minister of Education during a previous official visit to a rural school in Sabah or Sarawak, things would have been different. Comprehensive remedial measures would certainly have been implemented a long time ago and the poor 18 children would probably not have suffered their unfortunate fate.

Sarawak’s budget has earmarked RM3.3bn as development expenditure for 2012. Our federal budget has earmarked RM51.2bn as total development expenditure for 2012. And how much are we allocating for rural school renovations and maintenance?

Sarawak’s new state legislative assembly building cost a cool RM296.5m. But we cannot even spend a few million ringgit repairing all our ramshackle rural schools and boarding facilities in Sarawak?

Cow projects in Malaysia get funded up to the tune of RM250m. But we cannot earmark urgent and adequate funds to ensure that all our rural schools are made safe for our children once and for all?

Don’t our rural schoolchildren in Sarawak and Sabah deserve at least as much as our cows?

Or are all our hot-shot, media-loving politicians and senior bureaucrats just too cow-brained to realise this?

A wanita leader from my area was condemning PKR and others for supporting Anwar at 901 recently. So a friend asked her which is worst in Islam - sodomy or misuse of position and funds meant for the Rakyat? The wanita leader replied both. Then why support Shahrizat and her family members? The wanita leader replied that it is not true that Shahrizat had anything to do with the cow business just because the money was given to her husband Salleh. Anyway who said that the RM250 million was misused. The wanita leader claimed that Shahrizat had said she and her husband were already very rich before she joined politic so she does not need the money. It was Pak Lah and Khairy who insisted her husband Salleh get involve in the cow business. Anyway who said the business is in a mess. Even Auditor-General had said that the business did not fulfil its requirement but not messy as claimed by PKR. Say what you want Shahrizat had worked very hard for the party and had never asked for projects from the Government. Why is everyone jealous of her? My friend then asked the wanita leader whether she got any project or loans or free share from the government. Except for free share no project or loans because she does not need it. Then my friend asked whether she has Malay friends who are struggling to put food on the table. The wanita leader replied 'of course'. Then why not ask Shahrizat to donate RM1,000 to her struggling friends. The replied was- Why should Shahrizat give money to someone she doesn't know? My friend then replied isn't it true that Pak Lah and Khairy are not friends of Salleh?

My friend parting words were 'Why support corruption and misuse of funds but condemn sodomy that is between two parties and does not affect the Rakyat or its economy.

The wanita leader just walked off.

Bank ATMs Converted to Steal IDs

A team of organized criminals are installing equipment on legitimate bank ATM's in at least 2 regions to steal both the ATM card number and the PIN. The team sits nearby in a car receiving the information transmitted wirelessly over weekends and evenings from equipment they install on the front of the ATM (see photos). If you see an attachment like this, do not use the ATM and report it immediately to the bank using the phone on the front of the ATM.

The equipment used to capture your ATM card number and PIN are cleverly disguised to look like normal ATM equipment. A "skimmer" is mounted to the front of the normal ATM card slot that reads the ATM card number and transmits it to the criminals sitting in a nearby car.

At the same time, a wireless camera is disguised to look like a leaflet holder and is mounted in a position to view ATM PIN entries.

The thieves copy the cards and use the PIN numbers to withdraw thousands from many accounts in a very short time directly from the bank ATM.

During the first week of 2012, UFO reports from around the world have increased 500%. The alien invasion is underway!

The new year of UFO sightings is off and running as the worldwide proliferation of digital video cameras and phone cams makes it easier than ever to photograph unusual sights in the sky above us.

The Colorado-based Mutual UFO Netowrk, the largest UFO investigative organization in the world, received many reports of UFOs during the first week of the year from eyewitnesses in 36 out of 50 states. Also, the U.N. Panel on Extraterrestrials has been swamped with reports of alien sightings – spaceships AND beings.

Dr. John Malley, the head of the U.N. Panel on Extraterrestrials, met with WWN to discuss the situation.

“We have predicted this for a while. This is a seminal moment in life of our planet, and our species. We have two sets of alien beings invading our planet,” Malley said. The aliens from Planet Zeeba have been arriving here since October of 2010 and are here to help heal the earth and bring peace to all people on earth. The Gootans began invading our planet in November of 2011 and they are here… well, they are here to take over.”

Dr. Susan Begley who, along with Dr. Banesh Bannerjee, works closely with Dr. Malley on the U.N. Panel, said that UFO sightings will keep increasing throughout this year. “Our job is identify each of the ships that witnesses see and then attempt to figure out if there is a plan, or a strategy being used.”

In the United States, only states have NOT reported a dramatic increase in UFO sightings. Those states are: Alaska, Arkansas, Delaware, Hawaii, Maine, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Washington, Wisconsin and Wyoming — but Dr. Malley said that by the end of January, all these states will have numerous sightings.

For the entire month of January 2011, MUFON recorded around 500 reports, and we’re already up to 839 after just the first week of 2012,” said MUFON associate director Marty Mark.

“For December, we had 1,930, compared to about 200 in December 2010,” Mark told WWN.

“Last year, we averaged over 6,000 total sightings, and if it continues at this pace, we’ll be up 5,000 percent,” he said.

According to New Zealand’s WeatherWatch.co.nz., in the first 24 hours of the new year, it received “almost 580 reports and they’re still flooding in at about 190 an hour.”

“Many people around the world have been outside celebrating the new year. In the U.S., where most of the sightings came from, conditions were fairly mild and dry in many areas, so more people were outside to see things,” weather analyst Philip Duncan said in a statement.

Here’s a sample of sightings so far this year:

Jan. 3: Two slow-moving, bright flying objects (Zeeban ships) were recorded over Sinaloa, Mexico.

Jan. 4: The skies above North Carolinawere the subject of videotape of bright objects (Gootan ships).

Jan. 5: A white-colored globe was captured on video over Mesa, Arizona.

Jan. 6: A strange, bright object was videotaped as it fell out of the sky over Wakayama, Japan. This was identified as a Zeeban ship by the U.N. Panel on Extraterrestrials.

Jan. 7: Some high-altitude glowing orbs were caught on videotape over San Antonio, Texas.

Jan. 7: On the other side of the world, two bright objects were videotaped above Minsk, Belarus.

Safe nuclear does exist, and China is leading the way with thorium

A few weeks before the tsunami struck Fukushima’s uranium reactors and shattered public faith in nuclear power, China revealed that it was launching a rival technology to build a safer, cleaner, and ultimately cheaper network of reactors based on thorium.

If China’s dash for thorium power succeeds, it will vastly alter the global energy landscape and may avert a calamitous conflict over resources as Asia’s industrial revolutions clash head-on with the West’s entrenched consumption.

China’s Academy of Sciences said it had chosen a “thorium-based molten salt reactor system”. The liquid fuel idea was pioneered by US physicists at Oak Ridge National Lab in the 1960s, but the US has long since dropped the ball. Further evidence of Barack `Obama’s “Sputnik moment”, you could say.

Chinese scientists claim that hazardous waste will be a thousand times less than with uranium. The system is inherently less prone to disaster.

“The reactor has an amazing safety feature,” said Kirk Sorensen, a former NASA engineer at Teledyne Brown and a thorium expert.

“If it begins to overheat, a little plug melts and the salts drain into a pan. There is no need for computers, or the sort of electrical pumps that were crippled by the tsunami. The reactor saves itself,” he said.

“They operate at atmospheric pressure so you don’t have the sort of hydrogen explosions we’ve seen in Japan. One of these reactors would have come through the tsunami just fine. There would have been no radiation release.”

Thorium is a silvery metal named after the Norse god of thunder. The metal has its own “issues” but no thorium reactor could easily spin out of control in the manner of Three Mile Island, Chernobyl, or now Fukushima.

Professor Robert Cywinksi from Huddersfield University said thorium must be bombarded with neutrons to drive the fission process. “There is no chain reaction. Fission dies the moment you switch off the photon beam. There are not enough neutrons for it continue of its own accord,” he said.

Dr Cywinski, who anchors a UK-wide thorium team, said the residual heat left behind in a crisis would be “orders of magnitude less” than in a uranium reactor.

The earth’s crust holds 80 years of uranium at expected usage rates, he said. Thorium is as common as lead. America has buried tons as a by-product of rare earth metals mining. Norway has so much that Oslo is planning a post-oil era where thorium might drive the country’s next great phase of wealth. Even Britain has seams in Wales and in the granite cliffs of Cornwall. Almost all the mineral is usable as fuel, compared to 0.7pc of uranium. There is enough to power civilization for thousands of years.

I write before knowing the outcome of the Fukushima drama, but as yet none of 15,000 deaths are linked to nuclear failure. Indeed, there has never been a verified death from nuclear power in the West in half a century. Perspective is in order.

We cannot avoid the fact that two to three billion extra people now expect – and will obtain – a western lifestyle. China alone plans to produce 100m cars and buses every year by 2020.

The International Atomic Energy Agency said the world currently has 442 nuclear reactors. They generate 372 gigawatts of power, providing 14pc of global electricity. Nuclear output must double over twenty years just to keep pace with the rise of the China and India.

If a string of countries cancel or cut back future reactors, let alone follow Germany’s Angela Merkel in shutting some down, they shift the strain onto gas, oil, and coal. Since the West is also cutting solar subsidies, they can hardly expect the solar industry to plug the gap.

BP’s disaster at Macondo should teach us not to expect too much from oil reserves deep below the oceans, beneath layers of blinding salt. Meanwhile, we rely uneasily on Wahabi repression to crush dissent in the Gulf and keep Arabian crude flowing our way. So where can we turn, unless we revert to coal and give up on the ice caps altogether? That would be courting fate.

US physicists in the late 1940s explored thorium fuel for power. It has a higher neutron yield than uranium, a better fission rating, longer fuel cycles, and does not require the extra cost of isotope separation.

The plans were shelved because thorium does not produce plutonium for bombs. As a happy bonus, it can burn up plutonium and toxic waste from old reactors, reducing radio-toxicity and acting as an eco-cleaner.

Dr Cywinski is developing an accelerator driven sub-critical reactor for thorium, a cutting-edge project worldwide. It needs to £300m of public money for the next phase, and £1.5bn of commercial investment to produce the first working plant. Thereafter, economies of scale kick in fast. The idea is to make pint-size 600MW reactors.

Yet any hope of state support seems to have died with the Coalition budget cuts, and with it hopes that Britain could take a lead in the energy revolution. It is understandable, of course. Funds are scarce. The UK has already put its efforts into the next generation of uranium reactors. Yet critics say vested interests with sunk costs in uranium technology succeeded in chilling enthusiasm.

The same happened a decade ago to a parallel project by Nobel laureate Carlo Rubbia at CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research). France’s nuclear industry killed proposals for funding from Brussels, though a French group is now working on thorium in Grenoble.

Norway’s Aker Solution has bought Professor Rubbia’s patent. It had hoped to build the first sub-critical reactor in the UK, but seems to be giving up on Britain and locking up a deal to build it in China instead, where minds and wallets are more open.

So the Chinese will soon lead on this thorium technology as well as molten-salts. Good luck to them. They are doing Mankind a favour. We may get through the century without tearing each other apart over scarce energy and wrecking the planet.

A BATTLE between a class of fourth graders and a major movie studio would seem an unequal fight.

So it proved to be: the studio buckled. And therein lies a story of how new Internet tools are allowing very ordinary people to defeat some of the most powerful corporate and political interests around — by threatening the titans with the online equivalent of a tarring and feathering.

Take Ted Wells’s fourth-grade class in Brookline, Mass. The kids read the Dr. Seuss story “The Lorax” and admired its emphasis on protecting nature, so they were delighted to hear that Universal Studios would be releasing a movie version in March. But when the kids went to the movie’s Web site, they were crushed that the site seemed to ignore the environmental themes.

So last month they started a petition on Change.org, the go-to site for Web uprisings. They demanded that Universal Studios “let the Lorax speak for the trees.” The petition went viral, quickly gathering more than 57,000 signatures, and the studio updated the movie site with the environmental message that the kids had dictated.

“It was exactly what the kids asked for — the kids were through the roof,” Wells told me, recalling the celebratory party that the children held during their snack break. “These kids are really feeling the glow of making the world a better place. They’re feeling that power.”

The opportunities for Web naming-and-shaming through Change.org caught my eye when I reported recently on sex traffickers who peddle teenage girls on Backpage.com. I learned that a petition on Change.org had gathered 86,000 signatures calling for the company to stop accepting adult ads.

My next column was about journalists being brutalized in Ethiopian prisons. A 19-year-old college freshman in Idaho, Kelsey Crow, read the column and started a petition to free those journalists — and in no time gathered more than 4,000 signatures.

Does that matter? Does Ethiopia’s prime minister, Meles Zenawi, care what a band of cyber citizens thinks of him? Skepticism is warranted, but so far Change.org petitions have seen some remarkable successes.

Ecuador, for example, used to run a network of “clinics” where lesbians were sometimes abused in the guise of being made heterosexual. A petition denouncing this practice gathered more than 100,000 signatures, leading Ecuador to close the clinics, announce a national advertising campaign against homophobia, and appoint a gay-rights activist as health minister.

The masterminds of the successful campaigns aren’t usually powerful or well-connected. Mostly, they just brim with audacity and are on a first-name basis with social media.

Take Molly Katchpole. Last fall, as a 22-year-old nanny living in Washington, D.C., she was peeved by a new $5-a-month fee for debit cards announced by Bank of America, with other banks expected to follow. She took an hour to write a petition, her first.

“After a month it had 306,000 signatures,” Katchpole told me. “That’s when the banks backed down.” Bank of America and other financial institutions withdrew plans for the fee.

Soon afterward, she started a second petition, protesting a $2 charge imposed by Verizon for paying certain bills online. In 48 hours it had attracted more than 160,000 signatures — and Verizon withdrew the fee.

Katchpole parlayed her successes into a job with a new advocacy group, Rebuild the Dream, which seeks to improve the economic well-being of middle-class families.

As for Change.org, it is growing explosively. Founded in 2007, it is a B Corporation — a hybrid of a for-profit company and a charity, seeking to make profits for social good — and began to soar a year ago. It is now growing by one million members a month.

“We’re growing more each month than the total we had in the first four years,” said Ben Rattray, 31, the founder. He said that 10,000 petitions are started each month on the site, and that each success leads to countless more copycat campaigns.

Change.org has grown from 20 employees a year ago to 100 now, in offices on four continents. By the end of this year, Rattray plans to have offices in 20 countries and to operate in several more languages, including Arabic and Chinese. He recognizes that the site may be blocked in China, but shrugs.

“If ultimately we’re not getting leaders to ban our site, we’re not doing our job,” he said.

Meanwhile, what about those 14 kids in Wells’s fourth-grade class? I asked them what their next initiative on Change.org would be. They are still discussing options, but one possibility is to reduce waste by calling on companies to stop bombarding the public with telephone books and instead distribute them only to people who request them.

It’s absurd to think that 14 fourth graders could accomplish anything so sensible. But then again, they’ve already shown that the Web can turn the world upside down.

Sharizat says ready to face NFC allegations

BERUAS, Feb 4 – Embattled minister Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil said today she is ready and not afraid to face corruption allegations over the National Feedlot Centre (NFC) scandal, after months of denying her involvement in the cattle farming project.

According to Bernama Online, Shahrizat (picture)said the scandal, which saw months of accusations hurled against her and her family, had made her more “spirited”.

“It’s okay. We are politicians. We become more spirited when we are subjected to tests,” the national news agency quoted her as saying during a Barisan Nasional (BN) function here today.

Shahrizat was commenting on a statement by PKR strategy director Rafizi Ramli that more exposes would greet her when she returns from her three-week leave.

The senior Cabinet minister is scheduled to resume duties next Wednesday.

Shahrizat has been repeatedly linked to the project because of her husband’s role as the National Feedlot Corporation (NFCorp) chairman, and children’s directorships in the same company.

The RM250 million federally-funded cattle-farming project was first coined a “mess” in an article in English daily The Star after it made it into the pages of the Attorney-General’s 2010 Report.

The term was later repeatedly reused by various media organisations to describe the NFC after PKR launched a series of exposés to show the project’s funds were being abused.

PKR had claimed that at least RM27 million was used for land and property purchases as well as expenses unrelated to cattle farming by Wanita Umno chief Shahrizat and her family.

The opposition party also alleged that Shahrizat’s family used nearly RM600,000 from NFCorp’s funds to settle their credit card bills in 2009.

But the management of NFCorp has maintained that the credit card expenses were solely for business purposes.

The women, family and community development minister has since sued Rafizi and PKR Wanita chief Zuraida Kamaruddin over the claims.

Sugar subsidy hike seen negative for MSM

CIMB Research expects the recent sugar subsidy hike to have a negative impact on Felda’s sugar unit, MSM Malaysia Holdings Bhd.

“The 34 sen per kg hike in sugar subsidy for domestic sugar refiners is bad news for MSM, as we estimate that the increase is five sen short of the amount needed to cover the rise in raw sugar costs,” the research house said in a report yesterday.

“This is negative for MSM as the increase in subsidy is not sufficient to cover the rise in raw material costs for the current year,” CIMB said.

It pointed out that MSM had to pay a higher raw sugar cost following the end-2011 expiry of the long-term contracts for raw sugar at 17.5 sen per pound.

“Raw sugar now costs around 26.5 sen per pound, inclusive of transport costs. MSM also has to source the raw sugar from the international market at market prices, exposing it to higher volatility of raw material costs. We estimate that MSM needs a further five sen per kg rise in sugar subsidy to maintain 2011’s absolute profit margin,” it said.

CIMB said this “negative news” may lead to short-term weakness in the company’s share price.

“Apart from rising cost pressure, MSM may also be affected by slower demand growth if the Government reduces the subsidy and raises sugar retail prices over time.

“Going by the experience of the past two years, there is a good chance of a review of selling prices and subsidies provided around May–July this year.

“Despite the negative news we maintain our “neutral” rating, given the share price support from its dividend yield of about 5%. Also, the sugar industry may be liberalised gradually, which would be positive for the company,” CIMB said.

It noted that the Government had raised the subsidy for domestic sugar refiners by 34 sen per kg to 54 sen on Jan 1, 2012, to cover the rise in raw sugar costs following the expiry of long-term contracts at the end of last year. The retail selling price for coarse and fine sugar remains at RM2.30 per kg.

“The revision to the subsidy rate for sugar is not a surprise, as the long-term contracts for raw sugar expired at end-2011 and the Government typically reviews and adjusts the sugar subsidy at the beginning of the year to reflect changes in raw sugar costs.

“We are also not surprised that the retail price for sugar is unchanged given the upcoming general election,” it said.

CIMB, however, said it was surprised that the Government had yet to seal new long-term contracts for raw sugar at fixed prices.

“This is unusual, having happened only once in the past. Sugar producers are now sourcing raw sugar from the international market, which is negative as it exposes the sugar refiners to higher volatility in raw material costs.

“It is unclear if the delay in the signing of new long-term sugar contracts is due to pricing issues or is part of the Government’s plan for gradual liberalisation of the domestic sugar industry,” it said.

KUALA LUMPUR, May 9 — The price of sugar will be raised by 20 sen to RM2.30 effective at midnight.This follows a previous increase in December last year, which saw the price being raised by a similar amount.

The increase is part of the government’s concerted subsidy cuts first announced on July 16 last year, when prices went up by five sen per litre for petrol and diesel, 10 sen per kg for LPG and 20 sen per kg for sugar.

It also comes after the price of RON97 petrol was increased by 20 sen last week. RON97 is, however, not subsidised and its price determined by a managed float.

Last week, the United Nations released a survey projecting a moderate slide in economic growth for Malaysia this year due to rising food and fuel prices, which economists predicted would be further hampered by the government’s lack of political will for reforms.

Rosmah spree: Blogger discloses email exchanges

Fashion journalist Patty Huntington, on her blog Frockwriter, has disclosed email exchanges to attest to her report about Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's wife, Rosmah Mansor's expenses on exclusive designer label clothing in Sydney, Australia.

For the first time today, Huntington, in a lengthy write-up on her blog, annotated every detail on what transpired between her and designer Carl Kapp as well as his publicist, Little Hero, before the matter was picked up by The Sydney Morning Herald (SMH) on Jan 21.

Huntington (right) said that she was pitched the story on Jan 16 by Little Hero's staff member Holly Beer, who sent an email to the blogger on Rosmah's purchase of 61 items from the Carl Kapp Shop.

In Beer’s emails to the blogger, she related Kapp’s encounter with Najib and Rosmah at the the Darling Hotel penthouse, where Beer said that items ordered were "for her (Rosmah's) everyday occasions, which are many".

"The pieces need to be completed in a month from the second fitting. All pieces had to be altered to be with a long sleeve, with no bare ankles or wrists.

"A few of the styles she ordered included the Emilia skirt and long sleeve blouse below.

"She (Rosmah) is already asking for more pieces in addition to the 61 ordered, which is a mix of AW12 (Autumn Winter 2012) and SS11 (Spring Summer 2011)," Beer had said.

Huntington also defended her earlier blog posting by disclosing the arrangement to fly Kapp to Kuala Lumpur next month just for the fitting, though the latter in his statement to Malaysiakini on Jan 25 denied it and said that the visit to Malaysia is part of his Asian tour, to source material for his designs.

"Kapp told me, she (Rosmah) asked me to come to KL for fittings.

"I (Kapp) said 'if you (Rosmah) take care of the travel arrangements, sure... I can't believe I'm actually flying over there next month for an hour and a half fitting.

"And then flying back out again the next day'," she revealed, citing excerpts of her conversation with Kapp on Jan 17.

Genuine effort to mislead the public

After the issue hit the local media last week, Kapp said the prime minister’s wife and her entourage, including Islamic Fashion Festival (IFF) chairperson Raja Rezza Shah, had visited his shop and had made separate purchases.

Kapp was responding to queries following a report that estimated Rosmah could have spent up to A$100,000 (RM323,000) at his store.

The orders were processed and Kapp was paid upfront, said Huntington, stressing that neither Beer nor Kapp had made any mention of IFF or the London boutique in their press statements.

She also cornered Little Hero, who claimed that the reports had given the impression that Kapp’s establishment "is indiscreet, willing to divulge personal and private information about clients".

Huntington pointed out that none of the emails explicitly stated that the contents were off-the-record or was there a privacy disclaimer at the end.

“I do not make a habit of publishing anyone’s emails, but am willing to make an exception in this case as I feel there is a genuine effort here to mislead the public,” she stressed.

She also beat down Kapp’s bid to free himself of blame, saying that the latter and the publicist “volunteered, on the record - unsolicited - the unit size of the order. Sixty-one pieces. And apparently didn’t think anyone would do the math”.

“I write about fashion from a business perspective for a variety of publications... I am frequently required to include industry-sourced information and sales estimates in stories.

"The publicist in one email also provided the estimated cost of Kapp’s designs with the most expensive being A$2,970 for longer-styled dressed.

“Overlooking for a moment the obvious facts that Rosmah did not order any short dresses, short-sleeved T-shirts or strapless boob tubes and that the entire order was made-to- measure, if the order was indeed 61 units, as claimed by Little Hero and Kapp, the absolute cheapest it could possibly have been was A$17,995 (A$295 x 61).

“And the absolute priciest: A$181,170 (A$2,970 x 61). Average it out and you don’t get much change out of A$100,000 - which is what I reported the order ‘could be approaching’,” said Huntington.

Passing the buck back to Kapp, she asked if the purpose was to be discreet, why mention the size of the order to Frockwriter and SMH.

“If (Little Hero director, Rae) Begley and Kapp had any concerns about the information in the story, it’s curious that neither sought an immediate clarification. They did not.

“On the contrary, Kapp sent me an SMS at 18:35 that day (Jan 17) saying 'Thanks for the brilliant write-up!',” said Huntington.

When Greece agrees with the bond-holders to a 70% hair-cut, the ISDA will determine that it is not a default and many financial institutions who bought CDS can go bust.

What happens when there is a 100% hair-cut? Will the ISDA declare it not a default?

Expect another round of Quantitative Easing - QE, which is good for equity market as liquidity will increase. Beneficiaries: Netflix, IBM, Google, etc. Grease of the wheels of the market is liquidity. Advent of QE is good for gold, negative for the dollar.
QE is not a solution as it creates money out of thin air. It's a bubble-making mechanism for the markets.
In the early 1990's the ISDA was formed by banks who issued CDS. ISDA will determine whether the default by Greece is a default or not. That will determine the fate of the banks in the Eurozone. They have the authority to determine a credit event is a default or not a default.

Coming default by Greece will be declared as not a default. There will come a point when a 100% haircut will declared not a default. What happens then?

Pedestrians using the fully air-conditioned elevated pedestrian walkway linking KLCC to Bukit Bintang which was officially opened by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak on Saturday 28th January 2012.

The public gives the thumbs-up to the fully air-conditioned elevated walkway connecting Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC) to Bukit Bintang which provides a safe and comfortable walk way between the two tourist belts.

The 562-metre long KLCC-Bukit Bintang air-conditioned elevated pedestrian walkway protects users from the sun, rain and vehicles-choked streets below it.

The 562-metre long elevated pedestrian walkway linkage starts from the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre Plenary Hall and traverse through the city’s vehicle-choked streets of Jalan Pinang (Impiana Hotel) , Jalan Perak (Menara Perak) and Jalan Raja Chulan (Wisma Cosway) with various public entry and exit areas.

Presence of security guards and CCTV cameras to ensure safety of pedestrians.

The walkway was officially opened by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak on Saturday 28^th January 2012. According to an official, the walkway is currently open from 6 am to 11 pm.

“It looks interesting, very good and convenient,” said Dhammika, 40, from Sri Lanka who was with his family using the walkway after it was officially opened.

I am not against the walkway. I have accepted the fact that today Malaysians are been spoiled from the minute they are born. Look around you, children are been ferried to school to and fro in private cars, hired vans, taxis etc..... Only those whose parents cannot afford luxury transports have to take the miserable unreliable buses.

The first question in mind when I read and hear about the walkway is 'how much is the actual cost, who is paying for the electricity bills and who are the people who pocketed the marked up cost?' KLCC Development Master Plan uses the profit from the sales of black oil to fund this. So it is the people's money that pays for the walkway and also an enormous sum for the electricity.

Today countries like Sweden, Germany, America, England, South Korea, Japan and China are turning to solar as an alternative to electricity and environment friendly material to keep heat or deflect heat. We are using everything that is unfriendly to environment and more expensive.

The Government is creating projects that amount to sky high prices and very unfriendly to the environment to kill us faster.

We have two submarines that can only float on water and a man who walks on water. But we the Rakyat are sinking.

This is the position taken by embattled MCA Seputeh division committee member Collin Tiew.

Even though he knew it was organised by the Malay rights NGO Perkasa, he thought it was just a regular Chinese New Year visit and did not expect the function to turn controversial, Tiew (left) claimed yesterday.

"It was not my intention (to offend anyone), If my action has hurt the people's feelings, I would like to apologise to the Chinese community," he added.

Perkasa at its open house on Sunday stirred controversy after its chief Ibrahim Ali handed out ang pow in envelopes of white, a colour reserved for funerals in Chinese culture.

Tiew, who is also MCA Sri Desa branch chief, raised the ire of netizens for his presence at that event.

Tiew defends his speech

Defending his action, Tiew said he attended the event in his capacity as chairperson of a welfare association, not as an MCA member.

Asked why he had gone up on stage during the event and praised Perkasa, Liew claimed he was merely translating Ibrahim's speech for the Chinese audience.

"I had attended another open house and arrived half-way through Ibrahim's speech and the MC (master of ceremony) suddenly asked me to translate Ibrahim's speech.

"I do not endorse what he said, I merely translated it," he said.

When it was pointed out to Tiew that he had spoken first in Malay before repeating in Cantonese, Tiew said he did so because he found it necessary since Perkasa was the event organiser.

'I've never met Ibrahim before'

Tiew added that he had never met Ibrahim until yesterday and had only known the Perkasa chief from the newspapers.

If Ibrahim's event on Sunday had a personal agenda, then he owed an apology to the Chinese community, said Tiew.

Because of the white ang pow incident, even his family has become a target of criticism, he said, adding that he, too, was personally upset by the white ang pow packets and was outraged by Ibrahim's ignorance of Chinese culture.

"When the 1Malaysia concept is said to be just a slogan, he (Ibrahim) is an example of this," he said.

Asked if he regretted attending yesterday event, Tiew replied: "If Ibrahim Ali did this for his personal agenda, then I regret it... I am being condemned, I'm a victim of this incident.”

Analysis of milkshakes sold at McDonald's outlets in Russia revealed the beverages contained more vegetable oil than dairy product. Experts at the Institute of Laboratory of Nutrition, say that by Russian law these drinks can be called "milk-containing" but cannot be labeled as "milk". Consumer rights advocate Mikhail Anshakov, says that the "McMilkshake" is falsely named, "They do not list the ingredients of their products which is a strict requirement for organizations of the type they are registered as in Russia. Moreover, their products contain excessive amounts of several ingredients, which is why the product name is insufficient."

Representatives of the Consumer Rights Protection Society (CRPS) charge that by "concealing the content" of its products McDonald's misleads consumers. "You might be able to get away with this type of fraud in America, but not Russia" said Yogi Protovokov of Moscow. The plaintiffs in the lawsuit do not seek any money from McDonald's, but want the company to redesign the packaging of their products to reveal the ingredients in its menu items, rather than simply listing the calories, protein, fat and carbohydrates. Altering product packaging would entail a multi-million dollar expense to the fast food purveyor.

Taxes and ingredient lists

The current lawsuit hinges in part on another Russian court ruling last year. McDonald's won its case against the Moscow territorial division of the Federal Tax Service. That case concluded with a judge determining that McDonald's in Russia is not a restaurant but company which sells food products as a store. The result of the suit seemed favorable to McDonalds at the time, resulting in a 10 percent rather than 18 percent Value Added Tax.

However, by Russian law, a store which sells food products which it also manufactures must provide accurate information regarding the ingredients in its food, as well as any biologically active supplements and the presence of the GMOs, as well as the date and place of the food's manufacturing. Russian law also stipulates that a food store must provide information on the product packaging about the potential effects of its food for people with conditions and certain diseases.

Consumer watchdog groups in Russia say McDonald's wants to have it both ways, gaining the tax benefits of being classified as a store, while not fulfilling the obligations such a status incurs according to Russian law. The CPRS website explained the need for the suit, saying "The McDonald's restaurant chain deliberately violates the Russian consumer rights legislation, profiting twice from the privileged situation created by Moscow's Arbitration Court decision."

McDonald's representatives claim not to have received notice of the lawsuit and it was also absent in the court's database, according to an official statement sent to The Moscow News. But personnel at the Tverskoi court confirmed to the Russian business newspaper Vedomosti that the lawsuit has been filed. Some Russian legal experts say it will be difficult for the consumer group to win its case against McDonald's, pointing out that the milkshakes in question are produced using a technology certified by the Russian branch of Europe's biggest milk product manufacturer Ehrmann.

The new lawsuit comes on the heels of a year of both expansion and litigation for McDonald's in Russia, where it has operated since 1990. In 2011, the company opened 40 new restaurants in Russia. They also faced lawsuits from customers. In one case, a man who won $50 damages plus the cost of his sandwich after getting food poisoning from consuming a Big Mac. In another suit, in which a St. Petersburg man received $3,500 to cover dental expenses for the broken tooth he got when the salad he ordered at McDonald's contained a stone.

RELA – PM NAJIB’S FINAL LINE OF DEFENCE?

PM Najib says that there are 2.8 million RELA (Paramilitary People’s Volunteer Corps) in the country (Malaysia Chronicles, Saturday 28 Jan). That is a much bloated figure that far outmatched the collective strength of the Armed Forces and the Police put together. From my reading, there are only 500,000 odd Rela members.

Now, how and where did PM Najib pluck this number from? Does he not know what it takes to maintain such a large force? I think this figure even doubles that of the Indian Army. If indeed there are 2.8 million RELA members, then we don’t really need the Armed Forces and the Police…….. Just disband them and let the RELA take over the defence and security of the country. And with that kind of number, there wouldn’t be any more thieves, murderers and illegals in this country. Everything will be safe and sound, and it may cause some concern to all the neighbouring regional states.

And what really scares me was when PM Najib said that “when the chips are down, RELA will be with this government to defend the country”. What ‘chips’ is he referring to, and what is the threat that the government is trying to defend……external or internal security threat or a political threat from the opposition.

Please PM Najib, be weary with the kind of words and language used. What you have said can be interpreted to mean many things, and to people like me that had served 34 years in the military, I take it to mean that RELA would be your ‘final line of defence’; I suppose to be deployed to defend the country when both the Armed Forces and the police have lost their battle. And do you seriously think that when the Armed Forces and the police have been defeated, RELA can take over the defence and security of the country? I have serious doubts.

Now, there is already a move by the Home Minister Hishamuddin to arm the RELA. Yes, arming them may frighten Abu, Ah Kow and Muthu, but this will not frightened an enemy’s military force. It has taken years to build an Armed Forces and the Police with some credibility, and there is no way that RELA can be credible by just arming them to be trained once a week in basic weapon handling.

Defence and security training is not just about weapon training. PM Najib knows this very well for he was a long serving Defence Minister. And if someone were to ask me whether our Armed Forces and the Police today are well equipped and trained to defend this country against an external threat, my answer is one of skepticism. And if my answer is to be believed, then it is the government’s responsibility to ensure that the Armed Forces and the Police attains an appropriate level of ‘force credibility’ as a matter of urgency.

I think there is now a lot of confusion about the roles of RELA, made worse by the statement of PM Najib. I think RELA started as an unarmed paramilitary civil volunteer corps that predates to the time when the government was saddled with the influx of illegal immigrants. It was never meant to be a force involved in defence and security because they are not organized and structured as such. Rather they are to work alongside all other security enforcement agencies, to assist them in dealing with security and social issues arising from the mass influx of illegal immigrants.

My stand on this issue is that the roles and tasks of the RELA should not replicate that of the Armed Forces and the Police. They should remain subservient force to assist, rather than being involved with defence and security per se.

In restructuring the RELA and boosting them the extra allowances, I hope the government does not have a hidden political agenda, especially one that is connected to the upcoming elections. Let me be honest and straight with the aforesaid statement. I will agree that RELA should be given an increase in their allowances that has been meager in the past, but I will certainly have my reservations if their roles and tasks are to be changed.

A Speech Every American High School Principal Should Give

If every school principal gave this speech at the beginning of the next school year, America would be a better place.

To the students and faculty of our high school:

I am your new principal, and honored to be so. There is no greater calling than to teach young people.

I would like to apprise you of some important changes coming to our school. I am making these changes because I am convinced that most of the ideas that have dominated public education in America have worked against you, against your teachers and against our country.

First, this school will no longer honor race or ethnicity. I could not care less if your racial makeup is black, brown, red, yellow or white. I could not care less if your origins are African, Latin American, Asian or European, or if your ancestors arrived here on the Mayflower or on slave ships.

The only identity I care about, the only one this school will recognize, is your individual identity -- your character, your scholarship, your humanity. And the only national identity this school will care about is American. This is an American public school, and American public schools were created to make better Americans.

If you wish to affirm an ethnic, racial or religious identity through school, you will have to go elsewhere. We will end all ethnicity-, race- and non-American nationality-based celebrations. They undermine the motto of America, one of its three central values -- e pluribus unum, "from many, one." And this school will be guided by America's values.

This includes all after-school clubs. I will not authorize clubs that divide students based on any identities. This includes race, language, religion, sexual orientation or whatever else may become in vogue in a society divided by political correctness.

Your clubs will be based on interests and passions, not blood, ethnic, racial or other physically defined ties. Those clubs just cultivate narcissism -- an unhealthy preoccupation with the self -- while the purpose of education is to get you to think beyond yourself. So we will have clubs that transport you to the wonders and glories of art, music, astronomy, languages you do not already speak, carpentry and more. If the only extracurricular activities you can imagine being interesting in are those based on ethnic, racial or sexual identity, that means that little outside of yourself really interests you.

Second, I am uninterested in whether English is your native language. My only interest in terms of language is that you leave this school speaking and writing English as fluently as possible. The English language has united America's citizens for over 200 years, and it will unite us at this school. It is one of the indispensable reasons this country of immigrants has always come to be one country. And if you leave this school without excellent English language skills, I would be remiss in my duty to ensure that you will be prepared to successfully compete in the American job market. We will learn other languages here -- it is deplorable that most Americans only speak English -- but if you want classes taught in your native language rather than in English, this is not your school.

Third, because I regard learning as a sacred endeavor, everything in this school will reflect learning's elevated status. This means, among other things, that you and your teachers will dress accordingly. Many people in our society dress more formally for Hollywood events than for church or school. These people have their priorities backward. Therefore, there will be a formal dress code at this school.

Fourth, no obscene language will be tolerated anywhere on this school's property -- whether in class, in the hallways or at athletic events. If you can't speak without using the f-word, you can't speak. By obscene language I mean the words banned by the Federal Communications Commission, plus epithets such as "Nigger," even when used by one black student to address another black, or "bitch," even when addressed by a girl to a girlfriend. It is my intent that by the time you leave this school, you will be among the few your age to instinctively distinguish between the elevated and the degraded, the holy and the obscene.

Fifth, we will end all self-esteem programs. In this school, self-esteem will be attained in only one way -- the way people attained it until decided otherwise a generation ago -- by earning it. One immediate consequence is that there will be one valedictorian, not eight.

Sixth, and last, I am reorienting the school toward academics and away from politics and propaganda. No more time will devoted to scaring you about smoking and caffeine, or terrifying you about sexual harassment or global warming. No more semesters will be devoted to condom wearing and teaching you to regard sexual relations as only or primarily a health issue. There will be no more attempts to convince you that you are a victim because you are not white, or not male, or not heterosexual or not Christian. We will have failed if any one of you graduates this school and does not consider him or herself inordinately lucky -- to be alive and to be an American.

Now, please stand and join me in the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag of our country. As many of you do not know the words, your teachers will hand them out to you.

How people redefine themselves when calamity strikes

Imagine a world where you lost your sense of smell or hearing, a limb, your face, even your mind. Now imagine that world if your entire livelihood depended upon the very thing you'd lost.

Nick Coleman's memoir The Train in the Night: A Story of Music and Loss, published this week, explores exactly that – a music critic afflicted by sudden neurosensory hearing loss, as "silence descended suddenly and without warning" – struggling to cope in a world that has suddenly lost its most important dimension.

His experience of adapting to a new world, accepting he is deaf in one ear and that music will never have the same architecture, echoes that of Molly Birnbaum, who lost her sense of smell but continued to cook at home. "I concentrated on other cues: colour, sound and touch. I would listen to the crackle of mushrooms as they expel water while being cooked," she said. Alongside Clive Wearing, the conductor who lost his memory, Rick Allen, the drummer who lost his arm and Katie Piper, the television presenter who lost her face, their identity has been reshaped by their loss.

Dr Kerri McPherson, a psychologist, says: "Key to all our identities is how we see ourselves, and how we would like others to see us. The loss has a huge effect on how they evaluate themselves, because it is part of their identity, and affects how they think other people are evaluating them.

"If someone can no longer to do something, and it impacts their employment or social life, it requires a massive shift."

Katie Piper, the television presenter who lost her face

In March 2008, Katie Piper had sulphuric acid thrown in her face by the accomplice of a violent ex-boyfriend. "It spread through my body like fire. I felt as if I was being burned alive, that I was melting like a candle," she wrote in her memoir Beautiful. Her entire face was rebuilt with grafted skin in pioneering treatment. She lost sight in her left eye. She launched the Katie Piper Foundation to help others with burns. "I am proof that disfigurement doesn't have to destroy lives," the 28-year-old wrote. "I'd seen what was truly important in life, and found a strength I never knew I had."

Clive Wearing, the conductor who lost his memory

Clive Wearing has anterograde amnesia: it is impossible to make new memories. He contracted a brain infection, herpes encephalitis, in 1985, leaving him with a 10-second memory span. While he cannot remember new people, his love for his wife, Deborah, who wrote the memoir Forever Today, is undiminished. If she leaves the room, he greets her with the affection of not having seen her for years. But despite his amnesia, Wearing, 73, retains his musical ability, and is still able to read music and play the piano.

Nick Coleman told doctors he would rather lose an eye or foot than his favourite sense. "Music to me has always been a handsome three-dimensional container, a vessel, as real in its way as a Scout hut or a cathedral or a ship," he has written. He has learnt to adapt, to listen to music at low volumes. In 2010, three years into adapting to his new way of living, he listened to Exile on Main St. "It sounded starkly beautiful, as it always used to," he wrote in his memoir. "Music hasn't changed after all ... It's just that I get to it through unpleasantness now, not pleasure."

Molly Birnbaum, the chef who lost her sense of smell

"My world faded from colour to black and white, especially in the kitchen," recalled Molly Birnbaum, author of Season to Taste: How I Lost My Sense of Smell and Found My Way. As she was training to become a chef in 2005, she was involved in a collision with a car while jogging, fracturing her skull. Her olfactory neurons were severed; her sense of smell disappeared. She had to abandon her place to study at the Culinary Institute of America, and gave up her job cooking at a bistro in Boston. Gradually, her olfactory neurons began to regrow. The first smell was rosemary, now her favourite scent. "I always appreciated my sense of smell because I love cooking, but there's also the smell of people we love, the ties between smell and emotion." Last year she became confident she could smell everything again. "It was a long, hard journey with a lot of work – and a lot of luck."

Rick Allen, the drummer from Def Leppard who lost his arm

On New Year's Eve 1984, Rick Allen was involved in a serious car crash. "I left the car and landed in a field. My arm was left in the car. I didn't think I'd be able to do anything again," he told Lynn Redgrave in 1992 in BBC 1's Fighting Back. Allen realised he could play many drum parts with his feet, and continued with the band. "I appreciate my life more than I did back then. But there are always going to be reminders: it's more a process of leaving things behind."

I find it hard to believe that scrapping race-based policies will lead to chaos. The status quo is more detrimental to the country in the long run. The existing race-based policies have done little to improve the plight of the Malays. In fact it has created a class divide between the Malay haves and have-nots. This WILL split the Malays because severe class inequalities have caused revolutions, even in singular nations.

Dear Tun Dr. M,

Many years ago, in 1986 or ’87, I can’t remember the exact year, I had the pleasure of meeting you in a private family dinner. You were the guest of honor and I was a very young boy, excited to be in the vicinity of your towering presence. I had many things I wanted to say to you and when I walked up to where you were seated I could only manage one rhetorical question.

You were very kind. Although in the midst of conversation with my uncles, you stopped and gave me, a little boy, a few minutes of your time. I spoke to the Prime Minister. It was my 2 minutes of fame.

For the better part of my life you have been the Prime Minister of Malaysia. In all those years, I saw you as the best Prime Minister Malaysia has ever had. Sadly, I'm not so sure anymore. I don’t despise you or loathe you but I question your rationale for a good many things. There are so many issues that I would like to raise with you. It is near impossible to cover everything here but let me start with your latest blog post titled “Kaitan Bangsa Dengan Bisnes”. The Malaysian Insider reported this with the headline, “Dr M: Scrapping race-based policies will lead to chaos.”

You believe not everyone has equal capabilities and some people must be given special consideration in business and other areas based on their race. This is an argument that neither makes sense nor justifies special considerations. Let me elaborate. Would you allow an aspiring surgeon to become one via special considerations, even if he is inherently bad at it? And would you trust your life under the knife with this person? This is what you propose.

Allow me to provide further example. UiTM was founded in 1956 (as Dewan Latihan Rida) to facilitate the creation of Bumiputera professionals. 56 years later, it ranks among the last in the QS World University Rankings. While it is the largest university in Malaysia, and has admittedly created a lot of graduates, it has done little to create world-class professionals.

The IITs of India were created with similar ideals to UiTM. The first IIT was conceived in 1950, a mere 6 years before UiTM. In the same QS World University Rankings, IIT Delhi ranks in the top 200. The IITs are internationally recognized for engineering and technology with entrance exams that are so tough, candidates use Ivy League universities as a fall back in case they don't make the cut. Bill Gates has been quoted as saying, "And it's hard to think of anything like IIT anywhere in the world. It is a very unique institution."

This happens when you pursue meritocracy.

In your blog post you ask if it is true that race considerations in business vis-a-vis the NEP has stifled economic growth. My answer is, yes it has. The NEP's original intention was noble but it has become a tool to justify and facilitate nepotism, cronyism, and contrary to its original purpose, inequality. The nation's resources have been unscrupulously plundered to benefit cronies NOT the common man, be he bumiputera or not. Yes, we've had a good run under your stewardship but our fundamentals have been hindering us from the type of progress that Singapore enjoys. In short, a system that does not promote and reward performance, is inherently flawed. If you need proof, look at Malaysian Airlines.

I quote the book Winning in Asia by Peter J. Williamson (Harvard Business Press):

"Those Bumiputera companies with a continued reliance on preferential treatment and local connections and without a broader set of competitive advantages have been unable to successfully expand internationally. To grow, they have therefore diversified across industries within their home country, often resulting in a loss of focus and an inability to build deep operational competence in particular businesses."

And so again, yes, the NEP has stifled economic growth.

You say that when the distribution of wealth is disparate between the races, there is a high probability of enmity between the poorer and richer races. After 40 years of implementation, and devoid of significant success, don't you think there is a serious problem with the NEP as a tool to bridge the economic gap? Furthermore, the Malays, Chinese, and Indians have not been at each other's throats during this period. In fact, it is the ruling coalition that regularly stokes racial fire. The race card has been played to the hilt and it is now a misnomer for economic and social stability. I wish you had more faith in us and our ability to co-exist.

Progress is hindered by fear. It is the fear of change, fear of each other, fear of betrayal, fear of riots, fear of racial tension and fear of so many other things that keep us from progressing. Amplifying our fears by attributing wrong causes to effects is not going to help with nation building. I believe that the socio-economic divide can be closed through prudent management of the economy, a world class education system, observance of the rule of law, and nation-building policies. I ask that you use your influence to condemn corruption, nepotism, and cronyism. This is the real problem that undermines Malaysia and stifles its growth.

Miracle baby Oliver Morgan was brought back from the dead — after being born with no blood in his body.

A rare condition drained his tiny frame of virtually every drop while in the womb.

When he was delivered he looked pale and stillborn — and doctors were unable to find a heartbeat for an astonishing 25 MINUTES.

But battling Oliver survived against all odds after being given oxygen, gentle heart massage and a lifesaving blood transfusion.

Medics fought back tears when his heart monitor let out the first tell-tale beep.

Oliver is now a happy, healthy 15-month-old toddler to mum Katy and dad Jeff.

Publishing executive Katy, 36, from Maidstone, Kent, said yesterday: "Oliver's birth was so traumatic that I haven't been able to bring myself to tell his story till now.

"He was born dead with no blood in his body — but now he's sitting here smiling at me.

"The doctors literally brought him back to life and I will never be able to thank them enough for this wonderful gift."

Oliver almost bled to death after a rare condition called Vasa Previa formed an extra vein in his mum's womb.

It burst — and Katy woke up covered in blood 37½ weeks into her pregnancy.

She was rushed to Maidstone General Hospital and was shocked to discover it had all come from her baby.

Oliver was born by emergency Caesarian weighing 6lb 1oz at 5.12am. After attempts to resuscitate him he was given a blood transfusion pumped into the still-attached umbilical cord.

And at 5.37am the first heartbeat was detected and grew stronger as he was given more blood.

Katy — who was anaesthetised and unaware of the drama — said: "Doctors said it was one of the most amazing recoveries they'd ever seen.

"Oliver had no blood, no heartbeat and looked stillborn — but somehow they got him back.

"But there were huge fears he had suffered brain damage after being starved of oxygen for so long."

Oliver was taken to a special care baby unit where doctors decided to lower his body temperature to save his brain from damage.

He was placed inside a tiny coat which chilled him to 33°C to make blood flow away from his skin and to his brain and heart so they would heal more efficiently.

After three nail-biting days, consultants began raising his temperature to the normal 37°C by half a degree a day.

At the same time, milk expressed by his mum was pumped directly into his stomach.

And after just 11 days Oliver was well enough to be taken home to start family life with his mum, salesman dad Jeff, 42, and seven-year-old brother Jack.

Oliver's traumatic fight for life was not the only shock for mum Katy — she had been told she was expecting a GIRL after a series of ultrasound scans during her otherwise-normal pregnancy.

She said: "I had a baby shower and was given £300 worth of pink clothes and toys by friends and family. Thankfully I kept all the receipts!"

The proud mum added: "Ollie's just started walking and his favourite game is now hide and seek. It is wearing me out chasing him around the house!

But the way in which it does this is through the use of "isolated human taste receptors," which a group called Children of God for Life (CGL) suggests is a deceptive marketing term to cover up their true nature.

"What they don't tell the public is that they are using HEK 293 -- human embryonic kidney cells taken from an electively aborted baby to produce those receptors," said Debi Vinnedge, director of CGL. "They could have easily chosen animal, insect, or other morally obtained human cells expressing the G protein for taste receptors."

CGL says it has tried to contact Senomyx on numerous occasions to urge the company to switch to alternative testing methods, but has yet to receive a formidable response. CGL has also contacted many of the company's "collaborators," which include PepsiCo, Kraft Foods, Solae, and Nestle. Such collaborators help fund research and development at Senomyx, as well as pay royalties on sales of products they sell that include the company's flavor ingredients.

Campbell Soup was also a Senomyx collaborator, but shortly after being contacted by CGL, the company indicated that it had officially cut ties with Senomyx over the ordeal.

Besides the company's questionable use of aborted fetal cells to test its flavors, the flavors themselves are synthetically-derived. Artificial flavor enhancers are exactly what their name insinuates -- fake. They typically reduce costs for processed food producers by extending flavors and tastes but provide no nutritional benefit to consumers.

finance minister is already a deliberate and gross impropriety design of Malaysia’s executive branch.

However, a not very known amendment to the Income Tax Act 1967 has magnified the above mentioned
weakness by unquantifiable folds.

Back in 2005, after the nation gave Pak Lah an overwhelming mandate to run the country
(with already well documented results), the then prime minister cum finance minister gave himself
a most overwhelming and stunning instrument of power (or potential avenue of abuse).

Section 127(C) of the Income Act, 1967, has been amended as follows:

In everyday English, the Finance Minister can exempt anyone from paying taxes on any income that is
rightfully subject to tax under the income tax act.

What does this mean? It effectively means that the prime minister cum finance minister, is empowered
to point to anyone he fancies and say, “hey, you don’t need to pay any tax even though everyone else is
paying according to the income tax law.”

Given the climate of direct negotiation and inevitable cost overrun of government projects, mega, minor,
failed or overprice regardless, widespread accusation of thriving nepotism and cronyism, one can imagine
the power to award contracts and exempt income tax thereon can be a magnificent instrument of power
and control.

While we are enraged by the annual horror stories revealed in the auditor-general’s report, we also

wonder how much taxes these companies supplying hideously overpriced items to various government

departments have to pay.

Or, are these privileged and mysterious parties are given special exemptions by both the MACC and
inland revenue board at the sole discretion of the finance minister who since Mahathir administration
days, happens to be the head of the dominant political party? Surely Malaysia’s prime minister is the

No graft involved in purchase of binoculars

PUTRAJAYA, Malaysia - There were no financial irregularities involved in the Marine Park Department's
purchase of two pairs of night vision binoculars which cost 10 times more than the market price, MACC deputy commissioner Datuk Shukri Abdul said.

The Auditor-General's Report 2010 had stated that the binoculars were
2,805% or RM56,350 (S$22,920) more than the estimated market price
of RM1,940.

"In this case, no market survey was conducted to find out the actual price of the binoculars and that is
a violation of the instructions," he said here yesterday.

Shukri said the MACC had consulted the Deputy Public Prosecutor and concluded that there was no
element of corruption.

"We are also suggesting that the company be blacklisted for manipulating prices," he said, adding:
"Our investigation found that the binoculars could be purchased for less than RM5,000 each."

The report also said the department paid RM16,100 for an LCD television and DVD player which was
638% more than the market rate of RM2,182 and RM11,845 and 246% more for a laptop.

Shukri said Kapal Masai Engineering Sdn Bhd was awarded the tender to construct an all-weather
aluminium boat for the department.

tax from 5% to 6%, hidden taxes in the form of toll charges, higher electricity tariff to cover
for IPPs’ rates and probably GST after BN’s mandate is being renewed in the coming GE, one is
truly intrigued by the actual operation and implementation of this subsection.

If Najib as prime minister talks about having the best democracy in Malaysia, then he should
look into this matter and clean up this mess that Badawi left behind. This would be an acid test
to his administration effectiveness and political will as the path to remedy may be populated
with burden of history and well entrenched structures.

The Auditor-General: Audit was on the National Feedlot Centre Project

The Auditor-General said today the audit it conducted was on the National Feedlot Centre project, and not the company National Feedlot Corporation Sdn Bhd (NFCorp).

In a statement released on its website, Auditor-General Tan Sri Ambrin Buang also said nowhere in the report did it refer to the NFC as being “in a mess”, adding that those words were used by other parties.

He also clarified that the audit analysis found that the objectives of the NFC were not fully realised due to several factors which have been explained in the Auditor-General’s Report 2010. Among them, based on a implementation agreement signed in March 2010, the production target for NFC of 38,600 cattle for 2010 could not be achieved as the Entrepreneur Development Programme (EDP) which involves 130 satelite farm operators were yet to be implemented.

“If there are any elements of misappropriation in the implementation of the project, this should be revealed in the investigation of the authorities such as the Royal Malaysian Police and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission,” he said.

Ekoran laporan media mengenai beberapa isu yang menghubungkaitkan Jabatan Audit Negara (JAN) dengan projek fidlot di Gemas, Jabatan Audit Negara ingin memberi penjelasan seperti berikut:

Perkara yang menjadi fokus utama pengauditan prestasi yang dijalankan oleh JAN ialah pencapaian projek Pusat Fidlot Nasional (PFN) sejak penubuhannya pada tahun 2006 dan bukannya National Feedlot Corporation Sdn. Bhd. (NFCorp.) sebagai sebuah syarikat. NFCorp. adalah syarikat yang berdaftar di bawah Suruhanjaya Syarikat Malaysia di mana Kementerian Kewangan Diperbadankan memegang satu golden share bernilai RM1.

Manakala modal berbayar berjumlah RM1.11 juta telah disumbangkan oleh Agroscience Industries Sdn. Bhd. Projek ini diaudit memandangkan ia penting dari segi pengeluaran makanan negara yang mana Kerajaan Malaysia telah memperuntukkan sejumlah wang yang besar berupa:

i) Peruntukan di bawah Kementerian Pertanian Dan Industri Asas Tani (KPIAT) berjumlah RM73.64 juta di bawah RMKe-9 bagi menampung kos pembangunan dan pengoperasian. Daripada peruntukan ini, sejumlah RM48.71 juta telah dibelanjakan setakat akhir tahun 2010 oleh KPIAT untuk menyediakan tapak seluas 5,000 ekar bagi projek ini. Kawasan ini kemudiannya dikurangkan kepada 2,000 ekar sahaja.

ii) Geran pelancaran untuk penyediaan infrastruktur berjumlah RM13 juta diluluskan kepada NFCorp. pada bulan September 2007 dan setakat akhir tahun 2010 sejumlah RM6.52 juta telah dibayar kepada NFCorp. untuk syarikat ini menyediakan infrastruktur seperti kandang dan jalan ladang.

iii) Pinjaman mudah (soft loan) juga telah diluluskan kepada NFCorp. yang berjumlah RM250 juta menerusi satu perjanjian pinjaman yang telah ditandatangani pada Disember 2007.

Setakat Mac 2010, sejumlah RM134.7 juta telah dikeluarkan kepada NFCorp. berdasarkan kepada tuntutan yang dibuat kepada Kementerian Kewangan.

3. Tujuan pengauditan dilaksanakan adalah untuk menilai sama ada projek PFN telah dirancang dan dilaksanakan dengan teratur dan berhemat serta mencapai objektif yang ditetapkan. Pengauditan ini melibatkan semakan terhadap maklumat yang diperolehi daripada beberapa agensi Kerajaan seperti KPIAT, Kementerian Kewangan, Jabatan Perkhidmatan Veterinar dan juga daripada pegawai-pegawai NFCorp. semasa lawatan tapak dilakukan pada bulan Mac 2011. Berdasarkan analisis audit yang bersandarkan kepada maklumat tersebut, pemerhatian-pemerhatian audit telah dibuat secara bertulis untuk mendapatkan pengesahan dan maklum balas daripada pihak-pihak ini. Selain itu, perbincangan menerusi Exit Conference telah dibuat dengan wakil-wakil KPIAT sebagai Kementerian yang bertanggungjawab ke atas pelaksanaan projek ini sebelum laporan audit dimuktamadkan untuk dimuatkan ke dalam Laporan Ketua Audit Negara (LKAN) 2010.

4. Analisis audit mendapati objektif projek PFN masih belum dicapai sepenuhnya. Ini disebabkan berbagai faktor yang dihuraikan dalam LKAN 2010. Antaranya, mengikut perjanjian pelaksanaan yang ditandatangani pada bulan Mac 2010, sasaran pengeluaran PFN iaitu 38,600 ekor lembu untuk tahun 2010 belum dicapai kerana Entreprenuer Development Program (EDP) yang melibatkan 130 pengusaha ladang satelit belum dilaksanakan lagi.

5. Jika dibaca keseluruhan LKAN 2010 itu, tidak ada pun disebut perkataan-perkataan seperti kucar kacir, ‘in a mess’ atau pun penyelewengan. Perkataan-perkataan ini telah digunakan oleh pihak-pihak lain dan JAN tidak sepatutnya dipertanggungjawabkan. Pada pendapat JAN, sama ada terdapat unsur-unsur penyelewengan dalam pelaksanaan projek ini terpulanglah kepada penyiasatan pihak berkuasa seperti Polis Diraja Malaysia dan Suruhanjaya Pencegahan Rasuah Malaysia.

6. Pada perspektif audit, sememangnya terdapat beberapa kelemahan dalam pelaksanaan projek ini. Jikalau tidak, mengapa pada bulan Mei 2009 (sebelum pengauditan dijalankan), Kerajaan perlu menangguhkan pelaksanaan PFN sehingga satu kajian viability and business model (model perniagaan) dijalankan bagi projek ini?. Perkara ini ada dinyatakan dalam LKAN 2010. Ianya membayangkan Kerajaan Malaysia sememangnya sedar akan kelemahan-kelemahan dalam pelaksanaan projek ini dan telah pun mengambil tindakan untuk menentukan hala tuju projek ini.

7. JAN ingin menjelaskan bahawa pengauditan terhadap projek PFN ini telah dibuat secara bebas dan profesional tanpa sebarang prejudis kepada mana-mana pihak. Sebarang kenyataan yang mempertikaikan kewibawaan dan integriti juruaudit JAN adalah dikesali.

Tan Sri Ambrin Buang is a man of principle and honesty. A blessing to us Malaysians but not for long. Since the report about the feedlot project came into limelight, the staff at the audit department have been kept very, very busy by various Ministers, KJ and Salleh (Shahrizat's husband) personally. Yes for someone who is under investigation, Salleh had personally called on certain staff from the auditor's office to see him. What transpired is up to you to guess. The police and MACC are in the know but they have not move in to investigate on this. This is because the UMNO Government wants Shahrizat to remain as Wanita Chief. Why? one may ask, because FLOM has no other woman at hand who she can trust plus the closet that is overloaded with dark secrets cannot be open, which Shahrizat has threaten to reveal. So next month Tan Sri Ambrin Buang will officially retire though he was told earlier on that his service is needed for another six months.

Zahid Hamidi need to be roasted alive

Four months ago, I wrote about Defence Minister Datuk Seri Zahid Hamidi and Co. wanting to purchase six more Second Generation Patrol Vessels or SGPVs for the Navy. The story was ignored by the public ; and so I have to write this again.

Some of you will recall that when the Government decided to privatise the Lumut Naval Dockyard in the early 1990s to the man with the white hair Tan Sri Amin Shah Omar, that exercise also entailed the Government buying six patrol vessels from him for the Navy.

That exercise cost taxpayers RM9 billion: RM6 billion for the patrol vessels and RM3 billion for interest charges for late payments and exchange rate losses. Amin Shah ordered the vessels from the German company Blohm + Voss. Apart from procuring the six patrol vessels, Lumut Naval Dockyard (now Boustead Naval Shipyard) also paid RM300 million for their design so that we could build additional units ourselves if we needed them in future. “Malaysia Boleh!” was, after all, the rallying cry then, and our defence officials have never failed to brandish the catchphrase, “transfer of technology”.

Fast-forward 15 years later and our current Defence Minister has decided to buy another six patrol vessels. It will cost more this time, naturally, since these are second generation SGPVs with a new design to be built by another company, DCNS. Why we are not using the design that we paid so much for is something we should be thinking about. And why Zahid and Boustead Naval Shipyard have decided to change our supplier to DCNS is anybody’s guess.

All I can confirm is that DCNS is a famous company because DCNS supplied us Scorpene submarines (a deal in which someone equally famous got RM500 million in duit kopi). DCNS is also involved in a corruption scandal in Taiwan, where they had been sued by the Taiwan government for recovery of more than USD1 billion for a kickback scandal.

So how much will this new procurement cost Malaysian taxpayers? The new vessels’ combat and management system will be decided by some foreign consultants and not by the Royal Malaysian Navy, so your guess is as good as mine. But it’s not just the money I am worried about. The consultants are Singapore based companies. Are they not foreigners?. What if they recommend a system that compromises our national security? What assurance do we have that these consultants are not our enemies? Every time we question the Government’s secrecy in the procurement of defence equipment, we are told that it’s in our national interests to be kept in the dark. Now I know why.

I am certain that input from our Royal Navy into this very important procurement has been minimal at best. So we can expect an announcement later that will sound something like this: the base price for the vessels is RM10 billion while the maintenance, training and parts contracts will cost RM1 billion a year for 10 years. That means Tabung Angkatan Tentera, which has the controlling stake in Boustead Holdings, and ordinary Malaysians (who will be getting RM500 soon) must be prepared to shoulder the burden of a RM20 billion defence contract for vessels that neither you nor I can even be sure we need.

I know many of you are excited about the cow scandal now engulfing Women, Family and Community Development Minister Dato’ Sri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil. But that’s peanuts compared to what’s cooking at the Defence Ministry. It’s comical and unfair for some UMNO leaders to ask Shahrizat to resign when they are all in the same pot.

For the moment, I hope our Defence Minister or Prime Minister can answer three simple questions: firstly, are we buying the six patrol vessels from DCNS and for how much? Secondly, why were foreign consultants engaged, to the exclusion of the Navy, to recommend combat systems and other sensitive components of the vessels? And thirdly, why are we not having a competitive bid for this project? I hope we can get some answers soon, before the General Election.

Blind cured by stem cell

Two blind people have shown signs of being able to see again – despite having incurable eye disease – following a revolutionary operation involving the transplant of stem cells derived from a human embryo.

A third patient, a Yorkshire man who volunteered to take part in a similar trial in Britain, had a similar transplant operation last week involving the injection of embryonic stem cells into the damaged retina at the back of the eye.
The three people are the first wave of patients to receive controversial transplants of embryonic cells as part of an ambitious attempt to treat a range of incurable diseases with stem cells that have the power to develop into any of the dozens of specialised tissues of the body.
The two American patients, who each received transplants in just one of their eyes last year, have not shown any signs of serious side effects, such as tissue rejection or the development of tumours, according to a study to be published later this week in The Lancet.
One of the patients, a woman in her 50s, suffers from Stargardt's macular dystrophy, a progressive disease of the central retina that usually strikes between the ages of 10 and 20. The other, a woman in her 70s, has age-related macular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness in the developed world.
Although both patients have exceptionally poor vision and are legally registered as blind, their sight in the treated eye seems to have improved slightly following the transplants, even though their disease is at an advanced stage and was not expected to recover.
The Stargardt's patient went from only being able to see hand movements to being able to see the movements of fingers, while the age-related patient went from being able to see 21 letters on a reading chart to seeing 28 letters.
"Despite the progressive nature of these conditions, the vision of both patients appears to have improved after transplantation of the cells, even at the lowest dosage," said Robert Lanza, chief scientific officer of Advanced Cell Technology, the Massachusetts company that supplied the cells.
"This is particularly important, since the ultimate goal of this therapy will be to treat patients earlier in the course of the disease where more significant results might potentially be expected," Dr Lanza said.
In a separate clinical trial being conducted in Britain, a 34-year-old Yorkshire man suffering from Stargardt's disease underwent an embryonic stem cell transplant in his right eye last Friday at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London.
Professor Douglas Bainbridge, a consultant surgeon at Moorfields, said the operation was deliberately carried out on the patient's worst eye in order to minimise the risk to his overall vision. There were no adverse reactions and the patient was allowed to travel back to his home in Wakefield yesterday.
"There were no complications and the patient tolerated the surgical procedure well. We will be regularly monitoring the patient to follow the safety and tolerability of these transplanted cells," Professor Bainbridge said.
"While this is still primarily a safety trial, we will also have the opportunity to assess any changes in visual function in the treated eye and look for signs that the injected [cells] engrafted in the retina," he said.
Macular degeneration involves the progressive loss of cells in the retinal epithelium, the tissue layer that supports and protects the light-sensitive cells at the back of the eye. Patients with macular degeneration lose their central vision, which is important for reading and recognising faces.
"It is hoped that cell transplants might play a role in protecting people from sight loss in the future. This is a very early, small step in the development of a new, effective intervention," Professor Bainbridge said.
"This is a safety trial so we are deliberately going for patients with advanced sight impairment to limit the possible damage from the stem-cell transplants. In future we'll be looking to recruit less advanced patients," he said.
Up to 12 patients with Stargardt's disease will be recruited into the phase one safety trial in Britain, which is being run from Moorfields and Aberdeen. Different doses of stem cells will be compared for safety in preparation for a phase two clinical trial designed to assess whether the therapy can significantly restore vision.
The only other phase one clinical trial of human embryonic stem cells was designed to test their safety on patients with spinal cord injury. However, the trial was abandoned last November when the American biotechnology firm Geron announced it was pulling out of the entire field over financial concerns.

Hasan Ali, formerly of PAS, has ambitions of being Selangor menteri besar and has been at the forefront of moves for a PAS-Umno marriage of convenience in the name of Malay and Muslim unity.

Such a union, whether by coalition or merger, would lay the foundations for Umno’s takeover of the Selangor state administration. They would have a combined total of 28 seats in the State Assembly, on level terms with the Pakatan Rakyat: Umno (20 seats) and PAS including Hasan Ali (8) against Pakatan Rakyat’s PKR (15 seats) and DAP (13).

There seems to be a link, though perhaps coincidental and tenuous, between controversial former PAS leader Hasan Ali and the man called “Baharom”, or Muhamad Razali, alleged in some blogs to be the leader of the mob that broke up the ABU-Hindraf ceramah on Saturday, at which one man was injured.

There is no indication that Hasan Ali has any involvement with the action of the mob. However, he has been linked to Umno’s moves to regain power in Selangor through a PAS-Umno coalition.

The link to Hasan Ali comes from the Facebook profile of Muhamad Razali, a Shah Alam resident in his late 20s, and formerly from Klang, who was identified by some bloggers and blog commenters as being the mobster leader named as “Baharom” in photos posted online. There is a facial resemblance.

On his profile, Muhamad Razali says he attended SMK Jalan Kebun (school year 2002), which is in the locality where the ceramah was held, in a Shah Alam community hall. (Jalan Kebun, runs between Klang and Shah Alam, and goes past Kampung Jawa, Kota Kemuning and Bukit Kemuning, to Kampung Jalan Kebun.)

Md Razali’s profile photo album includes a picture of a ceramah poster featuring Hasan Ali, the controversial former Selangor executive councillor for Islamic affairs who was recently expelled by PAS and then sacked from the Selangor Exco.

Hasan Ali has also waged an anti-Christian campaign, alleging large numbers of Muslims being converted to Christianity, and backed a controversial » raid on a Damansara Utama Methodist Church dinner at which several Muslims were present.

He and Nasharudin Mat Isa, a former PAS deputy president, were in secret talks on a coalition with Umno after the March 2008 general elections, in which the Umno-led Barisan Nasional lost power in Selangor.

Since then, Umno president Najib Tun Razak has taken charge of Selangor Umno with the aim of dislodging the Pakatan Rakyat.

Hasan Ali and Nasharudin are believed to have been dropped from the PAS line-up of election candidates for the next election, according to Utusan Malaysia.

“Baharom” is said to be the man who led the anti-ABU mob who violently broke up an ABU-Hindraf ceramah near Klang on Saturday, leaving one ceramah participant injured.

This photo, posted online bears a resemblance to photos of Facebook user Muhamad Razali, said to be a former student of SMK Jalan Kebun, near where the ceramah was held. His Facebook profile suggests a link to Hassan Ali, the controversial religious leader recently expelled by PAS and sacked from the Selangor state executive council.

An appeal has been launched on Facebook to identify members of the mob from photo stills taken from eyewitness videos and from the motorcyle number plates.

A prominent pro-Pakatan Rakyat blogger, Milo Suam, posted stills showing motorcycles bearing registration numbers BLK 6537, BLH 4761, BLK 6423. He said it would take police only a few moments to obtain details of the owners from the motor vehicles registry database, and asked why there had been no police action yet three days after the event.

The photo of “Baharom” shows a resemblance to Muhamad Razali, a Shah Alam resident formerly from Klang, in his late 20s. Md Razali’s Facebook profile states that he is a former student of SMK Jalan Kebun, school year 2002.

Jalan Kebun, on the border between Klang and Shah Alam, runs past Kampung Jawa, Kota Kemuning and Bukit Kemuning to Kampung Jalan Kebun, in the sprawling industrial half of Shah Alam on the south bank of the Klang River.

The ceramah, jointly held by the ABU anti-Umno group and the Hindraf movement, was held at a Shah Alam community centre. A mob of motorcycle riders crashed into the venue demanding that the ceramah be called off. The leader, a stockily-built man resembling “Baharom” and Md Razali, was seen on video making threats at ceramah participants and throwing ceramah publicity material to the floor.

Power struggle within UMNO

UMNO sources tell me that Muhyiddin Yasin has struck a deal with his old foe and ex Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Muhammad Muhammad Taib aka Mike Tyson.

In the new equation Muhammad will throw his support behind Muhyiddin to ensure that Selangor does not cross over to the BN in the next elections.

That loss of the state for the second time will be attributed to Najib's poor leadership, and the Shah Alam and Klang Hospitals will be at the centre of the whole issue.

The state of the Klang Hospital and the reluctance of the Ministry of Health and the Central Government to step in to provide the funds and take all remedial action to ensure the hospital in Klang is upgraded as recommended by the Hospitals authorities, and the stalled Shah Alam Hospital is completed as soon as possible to ease the terrible congestion in Klang GH , will be a central issue in exposing Najib's inability to deal with big fish to put things right.

All information towards this end is being fed to PAS, PKR and the DAP by supporters of the two men. Muhammad in the meantime is marshaling his resources by gathering his supporters in Selangor UMNO to join him in this quest.

This will leave a huge opportunity for Muhammad to come back for the position of Deputy at the next UMNO General Assembly and most probably take on Hishamuddin Hussein whilst Muhyiddin will remove Najib or "very reluctantly stand against Najib."

In the process Muhyiddin will endorse Muhammad as his running mate.

The gap in UMNO and the distrust amongst the leadership is getting wider. Whilst Sharizat has been given a lot of assurances from Najib, she is still wondering if this is only for him to buy time as other UMNO sources tell her she is to be sidelined at the next elections, she has become too big a baggage for Najib who is now fighting for political survival.

Whislt Najib is trying his best to assure the Indian and Chinese voters that he is making changes for the better, "others" and it is not very clear who these "others" are, are doing everything to destroy Najib's credibility, and making him look bad in the eyes of both UMNO and the non Malays whose support he is desperately trying to garner.

The recent attack on members of a Hindu organisation who were to attend an ABU (anything but UMNO) meeting is said to have been arranged by persons who want Najib out.

In an immediate response, to try and mend the fences Najib came out with a statement asking Tamil educationist to come out with a blueprint on how to take Tamil schools forward. That is all there is to it, it is yet another government blueprint, a blueprint that will be left somewhere in the PM's files when ulterior motives are met.

Najib seems to be staying clear off Mahathir Mohammed as the Proton issue hots up, and as the ex PM is tryign to "guide" him on how to deal with Sharizat, after all Sharizat is his (Mahathir's) protege, and has now fallen out of favour and is a nuisance to Najib's future plans.

The fall of Selangor is a foregone conclusion, it is said that some of the strongest BN seats are now very shakey, the Malays are fed up and with so much at stake, FELDA, corruption - which they now can see clearly took away funds that were supposed to uplift them and instead landed in the pockets of a few elite in UMNO.

If you go down to the ground and listen there is this talk of a huge PETRONAS scandal that is said to have placed billions in the pockets of one or at most two people. These billions will not be detected by any audit because it involves an oil field which no longer belongs to us, and the people of Sarawak are left empty because of this. How true this is, only time will tell. This talk has taken huge proportions in Selangor and it is reported that the news comes from within UMNO.

The PKR coalition are working overtime I am told to uncover this story, it has a lot to do with Najib's ascendency to power that is all we managed to get. If there is a story and it is true, then the East will fall at the next General Elections.

There are scandals galore, the Scorpene issue will be surfaced with the whispers in UMNO getting louder by the day by the opposing factions it is not the opposition that is using it now it is the rival UMNO factions, why even now Sharizat supporters are askign what's so big about "Cowgate" when Scorpene was bigger, if Najib could cover that and why can't he cover this up as well.

Whilst Najib is in dire straits the ex PM - Mahathir Mohammed is wondering where he should park his son Mukhriz' interests, if you notice Mukhriz has been rather quiet, very quiet for anyone's liking, there is trouble brewing in the party, he has ambitions, his father has plans to nuture that ambition but where he parks himself in this controversy and this power struggle in UMNO will determine his future in the party and both him and his father know that and are worried sick on how to solve this power equation.

Muhyddin has no place in the equation and he knows it, Mahathir never liked the fellow anyway, his position as Deputy was because Mahathir decided to place him there and back him and even threaten Najib that Muhyddin would be President if Najib did not go for Badawi.

Once Najib took the position the young guard had moved in, it was time to begin the process of growing Mukhriz, a few stop gap personalities had to be put in place and the first was Muhyddin of course who would play a Ghaffar Baba type role, then Hishamuddin would come in to unseat him and Mukhriz would move for the Vice President's slot as a measure towards Presidency.

Najib would be asked to make way for Hisham or face the possibility of an investigation and probable sacking by the opening of the Altantya Sharibu scandal, the Port Dickson khalwat case and a lot more of which Mahathir has a complete dossier will be used as threats to get Najib out.

Once Najib moves aside Hisham will take over and appoint Mukhriz his deputy just like Hussein Onn did Mahathir, and the stage will set for Mukhriz to close the curtain on Hishamuddin and take over the PM's post.

If anyone for a moment thought UMNO was united they can forget it.

The United Malays National Organsiation is no more, it has long gone, it was deemed illegal and was closed down by the court.

The present day UMNO is not the UMNO of old it is UMNO Baru.

UMNO Baru is far from being Malay anymore, and it is far from united.

Dear Salleh,

I don't know which idiot is advising you and your family, but your meeting with Perkasa and 11 Malay NGOs speak a lot of your shady character.

First, you have absolutely no experience in the cow business to even think about going in. Second with RM250 million in your hands, you could at least have the sense to send your children to learn about the cow business in Australia or other countries. No, instead you and your family spent and spent like there is no tomorrow. Thirdly, like a typical Melayu, you and your family misused the money to buy condo, cars, branded items which has nothing to do with the cow business. Four, with that RM250 million you could at least have employ an experience person or company to run NFC. But NO, because the money was so easy coming in, you don't think. Fifth, you are a liar to say that the office of the auditor-general has agreed in private that NFC affair is in order. For your information with a total of 350 years experience in auditing, the audit department has very clear cut by-laws that no officers has ever make the slightest mistake or have joined forces with the opposition to shame any ministries or anyone. So you better apologize before it is too late. And the last accusation you make against your ex-staff of stealing RM2.7 million, let us see what happens next.

Salleh, prove me wrong and file a suit against Auditor-General and your ex-staff. Then be prepare to drown yourself and your family in the South China Sea.

Stop using others to fight your personal battle.

A-G must come clean on state of NFCorp, says Ibrahim Ali

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 22 — The Auditor-General must issue an official statement clarifying that the controversial National Feedlot Corporation (NFCorp) is not in a mess, Datuk Ibrahim Ali said today.

The Perkasa chief said this after meeting NFCorp chairman Datuk Seri Mohamad Salleh Ismail, who said the office of the Auditor-General had already agreed in private that the company’s affairs were in order.

Salleh, husband to federal minister Datuk Seri Shahrizat Jalil, had called for the meeting with the Malay rights group and 11 other NGOs to brief them on the NFCorp.

“It’s not in a mess. Everything is in order. But the Auditor-General has not made a formal announcement,” Ibrahim told reporters at Hotel Putra here following the meeting.

“I urge the Auditor-General to please be fair to everybody. He must release an official statement.”

The Pasir Mas MP also said the Auditor-General’s office may have made small mistakes when preparing the national audit report as not all staff are trained equally well.

“When they did the report, there were some elements that were accurate and some not so accurate because of weaknesses of the officers,” he said.

Ibrahim, however, stressed that he was not taking sides and that he would leave it to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and the police to carry out a proper investigation into NFCorp’s finances.

He added that Perkasa will stand by the results of the probe by authorities into the alleged misappropriation of federal funds by the company, pointing out that it was the group’s responsibility to fight abuses of power and corruption.

The publicly funded NFCorp hit national headlines following last year’s Auditor-General’s Report, and has continued to hog the limelight after it was linked to Shahrizat’s family.

PKR has since made several revelations relating to the scandal, including NFC’s purchase of two luxury condominium units in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur, and the alleged use of project funds to pay for Shahrizat’s and her family’s personal expenses.

The opposition party has also alleged that Shahrizat’s family used nearly RM600,000 of the NFC project funds to settle their credit card bills in 2009.

But NFC’s management has maintained that the credit card expenses were solely for business purposes.

It has also denied allegations that funds from the RM250-million government loan were channelled into its accounts before the loan agreement was signed.

Shahrizat applied for three weeks’ leave from her duties two weeks ago after new allegations of bribery surfaced in the NFC project.

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announced last week that the government would appoint an auditor to scrutinise NFC’s books in light of PKR’s accusations.
