Elderly man asked to vacate PPRT home for flying STAR flag

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah State Reform Party (STAR) yesterday described the Barisan Nasional government as “buruk siku” for allegedly forcing an elderly man to vacate his house which was given under the Poor People Housing Assistance Programme (PPRT) about a year ago.

Its election media director, Cecelia Kasun in disclosing this, said the elderly man, identified as Ginsos Tubong from Kampung Bundu in Api-Apin, Tambunan, and his family were asked to vacate their house after putting up the Sabah STAR flag.

“A lot of residents who supported Sabah STAR were asked to vacate their houses. But in actual fact, one of the conditions for PPRT homes is that you must own a piece of land for the government to build (your house).
“The PPRT residents can vacate the house at anytime, but what about their land? This is because at the end of the day, the land still belongs to them,” said Kasun.

Ginsos’ plight was highlighted through an interview with one Leo L Okala through the Sabah STAR media for the interior division and was uploaded to the YouTube just a few days ago.

“In the interview, he (Ginsos) disclosed that a few people from the BN machinery team had gone to his house and demanded for him to take down the Sabah STAR flag or he has to vacate his home. He obliged.

“But after hearing this, a few of us went to talk to him and told him his rights. The BN government has no right to demand any opposition supporters to vacate their homes as the land belongs to them.

“Relieved, he (Ginsos) had told the BN machinery that he and his family are staying put and if they liked, they can ‘carry’ his house out of the land,” said Okala.

Kasun claimed that there were many incidences where the ruling coalition had tried to sabotage the Sabah STAR talks and programmes.

“Take Kampung Ulu Monsok in Tambunan for instance. Story goes that every time there is news that Sabah STAR will be holding ceramah (talk) there, the BN supporters would lock these people at the village hall so they cannot attend.

“In fact, yesterday (two days ago), at Kampung Sunsuron, Tambunan, when Sabah STAR chief Datuk Dr Jeffrey Kitingan came to launch the Kaamatan (Harvest) Festival there, which also included a mega talk, I would say that the turnout was not that bad, but it could have been better.

“We were informed by the locals there that if they attended (the talk), they would be denied the Poor Students Provident Trust Fund (KWAPM) which was supposed to be presented to them the next day. So for fear that they would be left out, they decided to stay home instead,” she said. #myvote13 #ge13
